ship stats will increase with yours, if you like a style of ship just remember the system you found it in and go back to it later
While you can technically speaking find them in any system, the chance is better in a rich system - affluent, wealthy, comfortable and opulent. I think promising is also a "rich" system.
Aside from that, I don't think anything else matters. Either take your time exploring and keep your fingers crossed or start save-scumming at a trading outpost. My suggestion is, bring a save point and land your ship next to the station, don't take up any of the parking spots.
From there, just save in a position where you have a good view of the spaces while keeping close enough to make a sprint. Reload if you don't see an exotic with the first wave of ships. It's faster than just waiting for the ships to take off but if you're feeling lazy, just watch the ships come in.
Also, some of you seem confused about what an exotic is - an S rank ship is not an exotic. An exotic is a type of ship. The classes of ships are exotic, hauler, shuttle, fighter and explorer. A system can have many S rank ships but will only ever have one exotic.
While this might help some of you find an exotic, don't get your hopes up - it's still procedurally generated so pray to RNGesus and park your butt in front of your monitor with some good eatings. You'll be here for a while.
PS - All exotics have very few slots. If you see somebody saying they have an exotic with 40 slots, they're using a modified save file. Exotics have good bonuses to all stats but always low slots, that's the point of the exotics.
Don't see much reason to get one either. They look neat but that's about it really. I feel like I get more from my A 38+12 Fighter.
They usually ADD a new exotic in the updates so....lets see if we can find it
the tooth looking one wasn't in the wiki.
i swear it had the two tear shaped down thrusters and a fuselage that matched with a round front window. it wasn't an explorer but i didn't think to screenshot it. it was exotic because i checked it out but was way too poor to buy it outright and not in any way ready to trade an A class hauler with 38 slots for an s class exotic with 17

1) You changed the save game file, or you used a mod. One or the other. That ship doesn't exist otherwise.
