The captain simply starts selling you the ship instead of giving it for free.
Which is a bummer since if you're a newbie, you have no idea what's good and what's bad, + you end up getting no reward at all for saving freighters.
This is not a "free" freighter. This is a capital freighter. This is the only way to get a capital freighter. These typicall run from 200m-400m as opposed to ~100m for the bad freighters.
Unless you mean something else.

And someone only being allowed one of something does not mean another cant be better.
♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, I've seen a slightly better one than the free one I got offered for about 5 million.
relevant material from the wiki:
"There are several regular freighters with up to 19 slots of inventory and two designs of small, medium and large visual sizes for capital freighters with up to 34 slots. One of them is reminiscent of the Venator Star Destroyer of the Star Wars universe. "
"The second type of freighter space-battle was implemented in the Pathfinder Update. These battles are much bigger, and the update added two new types of super-massive freighters with three versions of differing size. They are often collectively referred to by many as "Star Destroyers", even though only the flat Venator design seems to be inspired by the Star Wars universe.
These battles begin where a player warps to a new system, and there is a rare chance that a space battle will immediately begin the second the player arrives at the system. Once the player detects the battle, a transmission will be received from the freighter's captain asking for help. The battle will contain one capital freighter and up to 10 pirates, which will all fly in pairs of two. The freighter will have a secondary fleet of normal-sized freighters behind it like other freighters normally do; however, they do not participate in the battle. "
"Regular Freighters have 15-19 slots and a price range of 80M to 186M from C to S class.
Capital Freighters have 24-34 slots and a price range of 168M to 465M from C to S class."
You can buy a better one, but you have to pay the price deviation from the old to the new.
I chose a bad one cuz I had no idea wtf i was doing.
Doesn't make sense that you can't exchange your free freighter (if you so happened to choose a bad one)
There is a bug I noticed like the one you describe. When you save another freighter, you get the same dialog that they no longer want the freighter. But after that dialog and when you select "Accept" There is a huge price tag for it. When you cancel, it shows the text that you now own the freighter and and ships along with it. But you actually don't own it at all. When go back to talk to the captain. You get the text that youre surpirised they didnt run off after you got it from them or w/e the dialog says.
So yeah it repeats and you never get rewards for saving other freight ships after you get the free one.
And yes, its a Capital One.
While another person gets a freighter worth 4 mil. Without having the ability to do the same quest again and getting a better one.
I was in a Vy'Keen system when I got my freighter, and their freighters are some of the cheapest / smallest. If I was in a Korvax system, then my chances of scoring a 100+ mil freighter would have been much higher.
I farmed 600m units to make sure I had enough. Its not hard.
Mine has 32 slots, two shy of the max, but hey Ill take it until I find an S capital. (shes only A currently)
regardless. There is a significant difference between capital and regular freighters. Dont spread misinformation.
ive never heard of a "free" freighter. Every single time Ive played a space battle they have said they want me to take the ship, coupled with a fee, its just their dialogue to give you the "reward" of selling you the ship. But, I may not have reached that quest when I decided to farm for my capital.
So, I repeat, while there may be a mission that takes advantage of this mechanic, this mechanic of the space battle is specifically to spawn Capital Freighters to give the player a chance of "rescueing" the crew and having a chance to buy a much better freighter than the normal run of the mill fly into the system and wait for you to board and buy.
The quest is flawed, that's a fact.
There's too much deviation from person to person. Especially since it's supposed to be a "starter" ship.
If you don't believe me, then start a new character, fly into any Korvax system until you get the quest, and boom, you got your new "capital" freighter m8, took you like 1 min of killing weak pirates vs grinding up 600+ mil.
I'm sure thats something they are going to fix in the future, because it just doesn't make too much sense
