How do you split a stack?

In-game when you hover over a stack it says you can split it but doesn't say how.

Hover your mouse on the item, then press "W" - it will create a separate stack of 10s.

You can also pick up a stack and rotate the mouse wheel. As you rotate the wheel, you will notice the number in the stack decrease. The items removed will stay in the inventory slot where the stack was picked from, and the number left in the stack will be the one you use/move.

painstakingly, 10 by ten or 20 by 20 if you combo S and Wheel down. In NmS you don't split the stack, the stack splits you.

There is a key for that, but I reset the binds, and lost the key. I had it set to mouse-wheel tilt-left before, would cut any stack in half, then I would roll the wheel to adjust by tens up or down from there.... :|

Now, I am trying to find it again, and so replied to this old post.

The default key to split the stack is the C key. pick up the stack with left-click, while you are holding it, press C to split the stack by 50% each press. It works everywhere you can transfer more than one item. The default keybind is tied to the "Toggle Trade Inventory" bind in the remap controls; why, because Hello Games, that is why.

But hey...try this. Its been a function of the game for several years now....

• Hover over a stack using a controller, select it and press X to split it in half. Repeat if needed.
  
  
• With keyboard and mouse it's a similar method but press the C key.

All the game keys and controller buttons and functions can be found in the game options.

If you play survival mode you can split stacks of 1000 by transferring the stacks to the exosuit where each slot only holds 500.
