There is a little hint below the multitool charge bar which tells you which button to use.

with the terrain modifier selected, click the mouse wheel to change modes on PC same as to pick up portable technology.

If you can't be ANY help, don't chime in. This era of "Just Google it" needs to end. People come to places like this to get help not for some condescending jerk to tell them to figure it out themselves.

On the PC I use the V key (I have a trackball instead of a mouse, and lack a scroll wheel. Fortunately, there's alternatives on the keyboard. Use whatever feels most convenient!)

Unless you already know there is a very small edit file, just leave thing alone.

Yes, you can create terrain- even build a naughty name if you see fit. The downside is that activity keeps adding to your very small edit file. Your "excellent" stuff starts to disappear---right before your eyes in some case.

The terrain tool is cool, just not permanent.

Yes, the terrain regenerates and will bury your bases eventually. Also, other players don' see see your terrain edits if you upload your base. So when I visit your base it will be buried underground and inaccessible. But it's just painful even for the base owner, when the terrain regenerates. I nearly rage-quit the game when that happened to me early on :( And no, there are no mods or any other way to prevent this from happening.

Don't bother then with terrain flattening or excavation for your bases then or you will be very angry at some point. Look for flat ground, Wild Base Computers or just build elevated bases.

What??? Dirak gave a perfectly valid answer to the question. He didn't say "just google it" He answered the question. It does say right there which key to use. The keybinding can be different for different people, some people changed it. This was the correct answer. I don't see where your unwarranted attack on Dirak came from.

While it is perfectly acceptable to insult a total stranger? Telling you where to see the hint is hardly condescending. I feel you a entrenching when realising their is an on-screen tip.

Remember that this game is cross platform, and you can remap your keys. Honestly I think his answer is the most helpful one as it answers it for all situations.

but this isn't "just google it", this is "look for it in that place of the game", which is probably the best advice anyone can give for NMS, because I would have personally avoided a ton of mistakes if I just paid attention to the bottom right corner text.

Try taking a look into a mirror, bro. I don't see you giving any useful advice, just an ad hominem attack.
