Can't evolve upgrades on living ship

I've just got my ship, but I can't upgrade my modules. Is there something I need to do first?

Yea, you need to go to experimental first.

You can relatively safely swap to experiemental to upgrade your mods, then swap back. As is recommended, back up your save first in case the worst happens.

I couldn't get passed the 'ring building' providing blueprint etc for the next ship part. The coords never refined and could not find the building. Tried it about 4 times. Not sure what to do now.

Just keep looking. Its there, for sure, the coords are bugged a bit. Your actually not too far away, just keep circling around the coords until you see the circle building. It can be within 5ish up or down.
Try using a signal booster to look for buildings, and use any beacons you come across. They can help narrow down your search area.
