Gojak, you are my Hero!!!
I had no idea about this, and I've been playing NMS pretty much since it was first released. I only recently came back to the game to see the living ship update and restarted. I saw your message completely by accident, and decided "eh, what the heck, I'll give it a shot.
So, I declined the first freighter I was offered, against every instinct in my body. I didn't come across another one in trouble for about 24 hours, then found another being attacked, and helped it wipe out the pirates.
THIS is my reward...

I've never seen anything so beautiful... much less owned one!
They are more about looks and rarity.
So, after a thorough reading of the Freighter Wiki, apparently "Capital" Freighters have the ability to defend themselves well against pirates. They pack a battery of guns and stuff, whereas regular Freighters do not.
The primary indicator is the length of the thing and how many segments is has.
Glad I could help. The second one is always a capital freighter. This is one of those, "I wish I knew when I first started playing" type of things. Anyway, maybe the biggest advice you can give new players.
As for those asking the difference between regular ones and capital; I think the most practical difference is number of slots. A normal freighter gets you like 15-18 slots. A capital freighter gets you like 30-35 slots. There may be other things as mentioned above.
IDK, as class really isn't that important when it comes to freighters as the only stat modified is hyperdrive range. And as you can see my B class gets 115 w/o upgrades, and his class A is 128 w/o upgrades. So it's not really much of a difference. Also like another poster said a key difference between a normal freighter and a capital one is hull size. Capital freighters are very large, even the small ones. But hull size is purely cosmetic.
...Who's giving out free freighters? They just started showing up in various systems I visited, and I was never offered a free one. "If you have 10 mil credits, it's yours" is the only option I see when speaking to the captain, which I do not have... yet (those missions from the Nexus are really helping with that).
Every couple of hours when you warp into a new system, there is a chance you enter a freighter rescure mission, which is indicated by getting into a battle as soon as you enter the system. After defeating the pirates you can board the freighter you saved and talk to the captain to purchase the freighter. If you never had a freighter before in this save file, you can purchase this freighter for free, no matter how much it costs (Capital Freighters often cost 50 to 100 millions of units).
