What's the point of S-class?
I have a freighter that is A class with 34 slots. I just rescued an S-class BUT it was also 34 slots. The only difference was that it's hyperdrive range was 11ly more and it would have cost me hundreds of millions to get so i declined.

Is there some behind the scenes benefit of S-class that i don't know about?

Should i be just looking for a 40 slot freighter? Do they exist? Can you get more freighter slots?

Another S-class question is, i can spend 50,000 nanites to to turn my personal fighter ship into an S-class. Is it even going to improve anything? Is it worth spending the time to grind out a weeks worth of nanites to upgrade?

I think 34 slots is the upper limit for freighters. I don't know if there are advantages to S-class freighters; I've never had one, and won't waste time in game looking for one.

I do know S-class has advantages for other tech. I upgraded an explorer from A to S, and increased its hyperspace range by at least 50%.

S class freighter I think is just more base warp range, and costs more if you have a freighter already.
Also the wiki is telling me 34 cargo and 9 tech is as high as it goes.

S class for freighters is a minor buff to warp range. They are rare to find and there is not much to spend credits on, so I would remember where you found it...in case it may spawn again.

Ships go up in stats as you upgrade the class. I took a B class hauler to S class and it is similar to my "normal" S class hauler.

That said, the ship upgrade is primarily a money sink for those of us who have way too many credits and nanites. I was maxed out and was able to bring my credits down to a few million. It also allowed me to bring my nanites down from 100,000+ to around 10,000.

I got the odd salvage data event in my personal refiner....so my nanites are back up to 70,000 overnight...hopefully that is a bug.

EDIT: I just went and compared the two S class haulers and the upgraded one has better stats and still can have 2 more tech slots to make it exactly compare with the "store bought" model.. Part of this is I picked better weapons and installed the enhanced warp BPs on the new model.

I’ve run into ‘high end’ A class that came close to a ‘low end’ S class on stats with the multi tool, I guess it can be the same with ships

The difference is S classes have the best stats when fully upgraded. Storage is irrelevant really because you can just get storage modules and could make even a C class fighter eventually have more slots than an S class freighter. I did that with my Exotic.

How does a freighter level up? I haven't even been able to level up any frigates. Haven't even gotten salvage frigate loot stuff.

to find an S class freighter is fairly easy, or so i find, i play for 3 hours then warp to a 3 * trade level solar system and almost every time an S class needs saving. ive turned them all down as i currently have the biggest dreadnought (black/blue similar to sentinal dreadnought shape )fully equipped with 34 slots but A class.

So 34 is max? Forever? With weird gaps?

For freighters, C-B-A-S classes don't matter much, what counts are the slots. Always go for a 34-slot freighter (maximum). A S class will have better stats and will ruin you if you buy the freighter, but these stats are only good for warping distances (Hyperdrive stats.) There are a bunch of exotic ships or Explorer-type ships who beat these stats.
For starships the classes are more important, it depends what you do in the game, chose the right ship type and upgrade it.
