I do know S-class has advantages for other tech. I upgraded an explorer from A to S, and increased its hyperspace range by at least 50%.
Also the wiki is telling me 34 cargo and 9 tech is as high as it goes.
Ships go up in stats as you upgrade the class. I took a B class hauler to S class and it is similar to my "normal" S class hauler.
That said, the ship upgrade is primarily a money sink for those of us who have way too many credits and nanites. I was maxed out and was able to bring my credits down to a few million. It also allowed me to bring my nanites down from 100,000+ to around 10,000.
I got the odd salvage data event in my personal refiner....so my nanites are back up to 70,000 overnight...hopefully that is a bug.
EDIT: I just went and compared the two S class haulers and the upgraded one has better stats and still can have 2 more tech slots to make it exactly compare with the "store bought" model.. Part of this is I picked better weapons and installed the enhanced warp BPs on the new model.
For starships the classes are more important, it depends what you do in the game, chose the right ship type and upgrade it.
