Warp: freighter or starship
So far I have only been using my freighter to warp around the galaxy. Is there a notable benefit for using your starship to warp to other systems? The way I play, my starship still has that fresh new hyperdrive smell in the cockpit and I am starting to wonder if there's something I missing out on.

depends, freighter I don't think as of yet can get the distance a fully upgraded hyperdrive on a top teir class starship. But if you aren't that interested in distance and just have fun exploring its not a big deal. I still haven't found any tech upgrades for the freighter warp drive. oh and mileage of warp cells with upgrades means less crafting of warp cells

When you install the economy and conflict scanners in your starship you will have more information displayed about systems to help you decide where to go. With the hyperdrive upgrades you can travel much further in a single jump.

Once you arrive somewhere in your starship you can summon your freighter if you want.

Just wanted to clarify - scanners installed on your primary starship carry their effects over to the freighter when using the freighter's warp map.

In an exotic ship with max upgrades, I can jump 2300-ish LY like 30 times on one tank of warp fuel (I haven't kept an exact count), so yeah, I don't bother using the clunky freighter. Most ships will do 1000+ and get 10 or 15 jumps per tank with only a few upgrades, so until the freighter upgrade system happens, it's only useful at the very start of playing.

Interesting point you raise there. So hypothetically: if I can jump 100LY with a starship and a freighter can jump 50LY, I can use the starship to jump 100LY and summon the freighter when I am there. That's sound a bit cheaty ;)

My freighter can jump 3000

sometimes the freighter rescue missions get bothersome. so i just use my freighter most of the time to jump to another system.

Freighters (when upgraded) smash starships for jump length.
I think that the record for an explorer is ~3300 LY per jump.
Currently my freighter (albeit by using a save editor to get the modules) can jump ~5500 LY.

This is an older thread probably from before some of the freighter upgrades.

That said it looks like currently freighters win the distance but need more gas (?? are there also efficiency upgrades that rival ships?) so small ships get far more LY per warp cell if that hold true.

Add to that, freighter upgrades are harder to get.

Yeah, I see that now. Got necro'd from 2018.

Warp cell efficiency still generates in freighter upgrades. S class are guaranteed to have LY extension and efficiency.
My freighter jumps 5500 LY and sips fuel.
(Also doesn't hurt that I've got a storage container full of warp hypercores waiting...:steamhappy:)

Won't argue with that.

If you find an S-Class freighter with a good Hyperdrive Bonus and manage to find a Derelict that gives decent S-Class Hyperdrive upgrades (240+ ly), you can get well over 6000 ly per jump. And, with all six upgrades, you get a fuel efficiency of at least 8.0. That's over 120 jumps per tank. The freighter will get you to the center of the galaxy in under two hours with one Warp Hypercore.

The caveat is that it usually takes over a month of regular playing to stumble on that freighter and find all of those upgrades. Well worth it, once you do!

A fully developed spaceship (Exot or Explorer)
Goes much further and with less fuel consumption
If one wants to make distances and e.g. to come to the core only a spaceship a freighter is too ineffective for warp

Show me one of those freighters that can do that
and not the values have been cheated
and what modules for the freighter have not seen something like that in my almost 2500hours yet

A fully upgraded Explorer only does about 3000 ly per jump compared to a freighter's 6000+ per jump.

No cheating involved. Hyperdrive Upgrade Modules from Derelict freighters, three in General inventory, three in Tech, arranged with all the other Hyperdrive modules. Each also adds 100% Fuel Efficiency bonus.

It requires an S-Class freighter from after Desolation. A pre-Desolation freighter doesn't have the upgraded Hyperdrive bonuses. Desolation did not grandfather freighters, unfortunately.

ok I have never received a module for freighters but now I believe you.
