No Man's Sky
How do you get your bearings? Plus a few questions.
I am always getting lost. I have not gotten off my first planet yet. I want to discover it a bit. Thing is I keep getting lost. So how do people get their bearings? Do we have a map? I can't find one. If not how come we can't map the area we discover?

Seeing what the game offers, I am heading due north. Will I eventually start heading south? How can I guage how big the planet is and how much I travel?

I tried to figure this out by myself but I am stuck now. I am at full inventory. So I a horder. How do I get more inventory space?

Last question is how do I start building a base? That is the only way I think I can get a bearing if I have been here or not before. Thing is I don't have a clue on how to start. What should I start to do?

*edit*

More questions. How do I know if I uploaded what I have discovered? I see them grey out now so I believe I have done it. I just haven't seen anything in return. Where should I be looking to see I got what ever name currency it is? Also what do I use this for?

north and south poles are real. if you travel north you will eventually pass it and south will be in front of you and north behind.

no map. if you need to mark a location so you can find it again you get a beacon recipe during the base quests.

you increase your inventory space either at the suit vendor at the space stations or from drop pods on planets.

a method for judging a planets size: fly north till you pass it, land at the north pole and plant a beacon. now fly to the south pole and land. you'll get a marker for your beacon saying how long it will take to jog there. or if you are in a exocraft, how long to drive there. Planets are very large.

if you follow the beginning quests (press P to see your quests) then it will guide you to the things you need to do to get started.

hoarding everything you see is a bad idea. you'll quicly become frustrated with trying to juggle stacks of stuff you don't need and constantly be fighting to open space for things you do need. best method is to pick up what you need for what you are currently doing. later on you'll have a better idea of how much need of things.

Thank you very much for that. I wanted to make sure so I am not wasting my time trying it and should be doing something else.
There is no planetary map per se, so you are generally reliant on waypoints and beacons to find your way around a planet. Your visor should help with points of interest and direction, you have a HUD display which will show waypoints for various things, once the visor is working I have never got lost personally. If you want to mark an area that doesn't have a save point, make a beacon and place it down, if will appear on your visor scan as a green icon which you can leave there if you leave the planet and come back to find again. Always scan when you are flying around with your ship, you will find points of interest and other places to visit and explore that way, also carry a beacon with you so when you land on a planet you can scan for nearby buildings and signals which can give you poi's to explore and crashed ships to obtain.

The planets can be huge, walking around them could take you a long time, this is why you have a ship btw :D If you want some scale of the planet, fly off the surface and get into a far orbit to get an idea of the size.

To get more inventory space you need to find ExoSuit vendors on stations who for a price can upgrade your suit and give you more slots in either main inventory or tech slots, you can also find suit slot upgrades on planet surfaces as drop pods which you need to repair to unlock the suit slot.

Base building will be part of your tutorial missions that you will naturally get, just follow those and you will be introduced to base building and how to obtain more blueprints for that.

What you should do first is up to you, it's easy to get side tracked in this game though! I would make sure you have your ship working, then just go into space and follow whatever path appears to you, things will unfold to teach you how to progress, but it will be up to you in the end.

Good luck.

Yes, think of your starting few hours as a tutorial, once you get off the planet things will open up for you nicely :)

If you need any help feel free to add me to friends and I can answer questions directly rather than via this forum!

Hi Davor, I will see if I can answer some of these.

Bearings: You have the right idea, North does work, and yes eventually after a long time, you would start going South, so they are true directions. Soon you will get beacons that will also help and have latittude and logitude coordinates. Base and ship markers that you can find visually will help orient you as well. If you get too lost, make sure your ship has launch fuel and use the X menu and ship icon to call your ship to you. Then you can fly around and reorient or get to a place quickly.

Ah inventory is precious in NMS, you will find exosuit slot increases at each space station, one each. Soon you will find pods on planets and can also search for suit upgrade pods, that will also add slots when you repair the pod. Ship slots increase with getting another ship. Later freighters and base storage will add alot of space for your items.

Bases: The on screen prompt will guide you through the early days, also pressing P key will bring you to quests, in secondary quests will be base and early progression quests. They are step by step and help you get everything started and build your base.

Discoveries: On your discovery screen, as long as the boxes are checked for plants, animals and waypoints, you succeeded in uploading them. As for planets and systems, just hit the "upload all" button at the bottom of the list. It will do just that. To note, sometimes the service is down and you will still get credits and nanites but will have to resend when the discovery service has a green ring. As for currency you can see how many credits and currency you have on any sales screen, as well as at the top of your inventory screens.

Biggest tip I can give sounds simple and silly, but that blue tip box in the lower right is chatty but will always guide you, just make sure you have a quest selected in your P screen, and it will give you the next steps. Some things take time and alot of work, but the game is good at telling you the next step.

**As for planet size there is no set gauge for it, they are pretty big, but right now we can only see meters displayed on waypoints. You would have to fly and drop two beacons to get a number.

I hope this helps, and feel free to ask anything else as you come across it. Above all enjoy the game and have fun exploring, it's a huge awesome universe.

Cheers traveler.

No map per se, no, there is no map period. It's an exploration game with very little in the way of maps, direction (you north south but not east west, why?), a god awful galactic map with zero way of marking anything. Yeah it's an exploration game, idiot explorers without the tool we have now. I have seen people post the coordinates, yet cannot actually see them on the galaxy map. What good are they for finding anything.
