anyone feel that no matter the updates, the game still is boring and broken?
hear me out on this. Yes the game Devs have redeemed themselves with all the updates and stuff they have added. And yes I still think it's a great game. But it still suffers the same problem it always has, Everything feels the same in repetitive after an hour or two.

All the planets feel and look the same. All the plants and animals feel and look the same. All the ships feel and look the same. I keep trying to get back into it after every update, but after I go through the new features I'm still left bored because nothing overall has changed.

And even though basee building is great and exploration is fun. Even Both gets tedious and boring after a while. It doesn't help that having a base is sort of pointless since you are always flying somewhere new and leaving the base behind. I guess in the end I'm saying is the game suffers from repetitive gameplay and nothing new to see after a while.

I agree with OP. I do not play NMS anymore due to the same reasons. The game has a few gigantic faults that really can't be solved. One of these is the game play loop. You can do a lot of things in NMS, but nothing leads anywhere. You have a freighter, but it serves no purpose outside being a storage container. We have different ship classes and weapon types, but there is nothing in the game to utilize that on (horrors can be killed with any weapon types it does not matter). There is nothing in the game that requires those different classes or weapon types. One ship class and weapon type can do everything the others can just as easily thus there is no point in any of it. There is no point in gathering units as there is nothing fun to be bough with those credits. You can buy a freighter but it only serves as storage space. You can collect a few ships but outside just having them they serve no purpose. This meaninglessness can be found in every aspect of the game. The main reason for this is the NMS has no real/meaningful combat/enemies/threat/exploration out there or anything to strive towards. You simply gather things because you can, not because you can utilize those things in any meaningful way. It is like the factions in NMS, there is no point in any of the factions. They are completely meaningless and if removed would make no difference.

It seems as if everything in the game is geared toward earning units and that the point of earning units is to earn units in itself. Nothing more. I can buy a fleet in NMS, but eventually there is no point in that as the fleet has no other purpose than just sitting there doing nothing. I can send frigates out on missions but what is the point. The units I earn from that can be used to increase the size of my fleet so that I can look at more ships. But outside that my fleet has no purpose. There just is no purpose/reason to do anything in the game. I can now have several multitools...that would be nice if the game put me in a situation where I would need to used different multitool in different situations...but there is no such situation. Again it is just another feature that leads nowhere.

There is also the problem of the buildings. When flying around everything seems the same. I can fly on any plant and recognize an abandoned building, but because the all "seem" the same no matter what race it belongs to. It quickly becomes stale and uninteresting. I never feel that WOW moment when I fly over a hill just to see that amazing unique building that I land beside and explore with my MT in my hands. These moments do not exist in NMS at all.

The problem with NMS is that you play in a galaxy that is procedurally generated. The very thing that was supposed to make NMS and be its strong point in the end dragged it down. Due to how big NMS is and how everything is procedurally generated, there is no magical and mysterious things to find and behold in the lands of NMS. It is just all the same. When you then also throw in a core game play loop which is lacking in every way, you get exactly what you would expect...a boring game. That is why I pleaded to HG before they introduce Beyond that they needed to bring in some magic to the game. Space Whales, a fun game play loop something anything that would catch out eyes and keep us there. Instead we got VR/MP and milking.

More than 3 years have passes since NMS was released and the fundamental problems with NMS has not been addressed. The Beyond update broke me and I have not touched the game since, just to buy some QS items. I tried to contribute to the community missions, but after a few tries I just gave up. I am at peace now with the though of never again playing the game. If HG does some major changes I will take a look at NMS again, but as it is now I just can't. In my opinion a procedurally generated game like NMS that takes place on such a scale does not work. If they made a game just like NMS but with only 100 planets and put in a lot of specifically created/hand created content on a lot of those planets along with a large part being procedurally generated I think it would be so much better than what we have now. In NMS once you have been to 100 planets you will have seen everything the game has to offer. I tried to stay positive and always told myself that the next update would fix everything. That update never came.

These are just my thoughts on the game and its current situation.

Yep me. I started again from the beginning, as I do every update, and I'm still bored even before I get the ship repaired.
I don't like the beginning now that walks you through everything. I wish I could not have it.
This game is looking bleaker after each update. I'm glad I have the 1.02 GOG install files stashed away to remember the good times before it became a mess,

Even after the upgrade, the game in my opinion remains a tedious grind of gathering minerals and making repairs. For me it is the same waste of time, and that is sad for a game that could be made less boring.

I put in 245 hours on the game but tonight I uninstalled the game to free myself from the repetition.

Sadly, I regret to say I agree. I have had my moneys worth but this game never really drags me back in the way that EGS does where there is so much more to do but that does not stop me restarting after every update.

The game has gotten better, no doubt. Personally I think there needs to be more combat that matters. I also think there needs to be missions with more in-depth puzzle solving and maybe a bit more mystery to them. Something to change the pattern of our mundane existence. I also wonder if it wouldn't help to have some voice interactions. I love the new ship upgrades and I'd like to see one more: The ability to paint the starships and Freighter.

I would also like to be able to track my Frigate missions and find a ship that's been damaged and get to decide if I want to warp to them and repair them or just tell them to return. I have on 3 occasions found the damaged Frigate but the way it is now, after a certain point it takes a bit of luck. How about the ability to ride together with a friend or friends in the same ship? Like a Hauler of Shuttle maybe.

This isn't meant to take swings at anyone. (you've been informed in advance).

It's a sandbox... meaning you set your own goals... and you make your own rules...

Some people are happy with that setup... others not so much... some folks need motivation... others make their own motivation. Which are you? (This is important, because this will determine how long you can be happy in a sandbox).

There is zero shame in admitting you aren't happy in the sandbox any longer. We all grow, some grow out of the sandbox faster than others.

I feel the same every time i watch (stream) or try to play Fortnite or any of the other fps shooter games. No matter what they do the core always remains the same. Its boring and repetitive, run somewhere.. kill couple people and die.. respawn and repeat it for ever. Its just that some types of games will never ever satisfy some people no matter how much they update the game or add new stuff to it. For me these are fps games.. for some NMS type games will forever remain boring no matter what they add to it, i guess you just belong to the latter group of gamers.

It's not for everyone. I like the grind. I can remember playing Final Fantasy 2 (The american SNES release of Final Fantasy IV) when I was 11 years old. For hours upon hours I ignored the main quest because I was having more fun by trying to collect 99 of every single item, and seeing if I could max out the money counter.

To each their own.

I love this game. When I find I am getting bored. I just start playing something and come back in a month or so. See, if you play something a lot. You tend to get tired of the same thing over and over. I mean lord knows I have gotten my moneys worth at this point. 400+ hours. Though ya, I get bored of it cause I have done it all and need a break.

Now if you are getting more bored and annoyed cause it does not have feature yet that you really want. Well, that may never happen. They may add more combat but I don't think it's a priority. I highly recommend Elite Dangerous for you if you want more action. You get less exploration but it is very pretty with great ships and lots of combat. There is also PvP if you like.

I am not big into it though. Gave it a shot but it lacked the exploration and features that I came to love about NMS. No big, still a great game though.

What sandboxes need for real staying power is co-op play and mods. NMS has been a success story long term, but it's still very niche and it's not unusual to be the only person in a gaming group that has a copy. If it keeps growing it might be a default VR hangout some day.
Lindy Bomber Dec 2, 2019 @ 5:34am
Respectfully disagree. The OP and others like him seem to suffer from unreasonable expectations, the pre launch hype may have contributed to that.

Like any game everything in NMS is built on a few basic mechanics which means all ships are going to function the same, animals are going to have the same behavior patterns, planets are going to be generated the same way, ECT.

What the OP wants is beyond the hardware capacity that game needs to run on (PS4). Maybe when the ps8 is out someone will make the game "MNS was supposed to be"

Yeah, they still have too much grind to be exciting. People saying you setting your own goals, but how will I set goals if I don't even have fuel?

Are we playing the same game?

You only have to repair your ship once during the tutorial and that can be done in less than 30 minutes. The raw materials for fuel are very easy to find. Plus you can buy fuel or the materials to make it from almost any trade terminal.

There are so many ways to make fast money in this 'grind' is the last thing you should be complaining about.

Your points about combat are valid, if your looking for a good combat game you are never going to find it here.
Mr. Bufferlow Dec 2, 2019 @ 8:33am
For those players who are complaining of grinding...you are playing it wrong. Many players have been conditioned to grind by playing main stream games where that process opens some new level or action sequence. I also get a kick out of the exploiters (another learned conditioned response). They struggle with a sandbox game where grinding or exploiting is really not required and has no big payoff.

I have over 2000 hours in, so starting to get boring...until the Syn update! That is what keeps me playing is the regular updates. It is like getting a new game every 8 months or so. I was disappointed in Beyond but really like the changes this go around.

NMS was never intended to be a mass hit, but more of a niche game. It just got super popular. Part of the charm for many of us is that it is very laid back and intentionally avoided the exciting "bang bang" shoot out style that most space games go for. That makes the game feel more realistic to me...or maybe I am missing all the NASA headlines about space battles.

This is a great game if you can set your own agenda, and like a laid back game.

Yes, fully agree. NMS has some nice features, and it*s fun to play for some hours.
But very quickly, you recognize, that it's core features are very limited, as described.
This has nothing to with the boring argument of those kiddy fanboys saying "this is a sandbox, you have to provide your own goals", as there is nothing, one can do, except for limited terrain editing, limited housing, discover limted amount of plant-bioms and creatures.
Have fun for some hours, it's worth the price, then move on.
Perhaps we some day get a game, that fullfill's it's promises, of a giant generated exciting universum. NMS is not that game. It has become a simply housing simulation.

I have a lot of screenshots on my profile from early when the game was released. The game was exciting and I loved exploring the planets and scenery. Now it is just meh. Either I'm burned out or the updates haven't added anything to explore or added to the variety of planets.
I'm still hopeful these updates will arrive at some point but until then I have 400 plus other games to play.
Lindy Bomber Dec 2, 2019 @ 11:28am
I have 800 hours on my main save that I started on the launch version.

I have a class A freighter and a full fleet of frigates (I also know what they are called). I have sent out 100s of frigate missions, the number if times I have to repair a frigate I can count on one hand. Insure the frigate group strength is one star better then the mission requirement and you will NEVER need to repair them.

Find a few starbases that sell 1k plus tritium and make note of them. When traveling through space blast a few asteroid along the way. When you are planet side scanning fauna or doing missions blast any blue crystals you find a long the way. You can also refine dihygren into tritium.

Multi tasking is a useful skill in real life and in NMS. Learn to stack missions and objectives and you will never need to grind.
