You claim it.. Then it's yours.

After that just get the thrusters and pulse drive working the same as your first ship.

Then you can summon or fly it. Fly it the space station and scrap it. Your old ship will appear in the station it's place.

You might find it is not worth buying a crashed ship, just too scrap that same ship later. Scrapping is really for something you already own and dont want.

Scrapping a ship is a good way to add free inventory slots to your main ship free... I added two already plus got 300k and upgrade modules to boot. The new method makes looking for crashed ships worthwhile.

On the theme, I was hoping for a way to reduce my credit balance and the ship upgrade is perfect. I am back down to a reasonable credit balance and even put a healthy dent in my nanites.

Big plus was finally using my little red exotic "Dropsy". I never flew it because it was too short on cargo space. Now I got a hauler disguised as a little red sports car.

If you find a salvage ship and don't want to trade your current active ship but have others "in stock" that you would be willing to sacrifice, just summon the other "spare" ship to the crash site - so you will see the shipwreck, your "good ship" and your trade-in ship. Your newly summoned "spare" ship will become your active ship and you can swap it out for the wreck. You won't lose your good ship.

Alternatively, lay down a save beacon at the crash site and return to your freighter, get into your trade-able ship and go and salvage that one at the station first. Then return to the save marker and claim the wreck, repair it and salvage it.
