I don't know about the equation of course, this is a trademark secret, but only a slight different animal will make a 'different' planet, and so it's trivial to calculate that the overall distinct possible number is reaching the quintillion mark.
Instead, for the map it's roughly possible to know the nr. of planets by guessing the nr. of galactic regions and how many stars are within them. I guess then that the visible galaxy has around only 2-2.5 million stars, which doesnt' mean so many planets (maximum 15 million).
