The way the game works also, many high level items seem to have higher drop rates right at the very start from ships to multi-tools. I think it is intended to be a bit of a tease. I have started many games now to check this out, and it is way too frequent to be coincidental. Most of my Vykeen dagger drops are at the start. I usually have 3-4 Microprocessors drop in the first hour or two. And I have always gotten a 23-24 A-Class tool by the time I have gotten a hyperdrive. There are other statistical flukes also, like unknown graves spawning near first landing sites on planets....in my last game over 1/3 of the unknown graves I simply found without prior directions, very often on my first landing on a planet. You have to scan around for them though.
The timeline I think that works the best, and is the most economical and pleasant, is to:
(1) Don't upgrade the starting multitool except for immediate quest goals needed to get a hyperdrive up and running...the devs seem to realize this also and made the starting tool only 5 or 6 slots so you don't waste too many nanites upgrading the beginner tool,
(2) Check the Space Station and small planetary trading posts as you play the first hour or so, 80-90% of the time there will be a 23-24 slot multitool which you can buy for 2.5-3.5 Million units,
(3) in the first hour of the game you will easily run into 3-4 abandoned buildings, in fact one of the starting quests sends you to one...that one is free. Each 15 larval core haul from a small abandoned building is about 1.2 Million units, so if you find 3 more, you have enough for a multitool that will be nearly the best until quite a bit later in the game when you feel like hunting for the ideal 24 S Alien or Experimental that you fell in love with from someone else's screenshot. With 24 slots you can fully load the tool up with S-class upgrades which then brings the tool within spitting range of the ideal S-Class that you think you must hold out for. Don't hold out....grab the first 23-24 slot multitool you see since the devs essentially hand it to you in the first hour of game play. After you build up your econ, you will be surprised to discover they don't show up as frequently any more. And then it will be too late.
Worse, you get no cash benefits from scanning since you can't upgrade your scanner. Dump the tiny alien gun....waste of time.
24 Slot is way better than anything below 12 Slots. Anytime. Because you can install 12+ more upgrades which surpass the difference in the original stats pretty fast!
For Midgame I've found the 24 Slot Experimental Rifle the best you can get. It has same Bonus as the Rifle (same 24 Slots possible), better Mining and especially BEST Scanning bonus.
With upgraded Scanner you get some 450K units every not so common animal scan, and some 72K for every flora! You will see the Millions rolling in every new planet you visit!
As Endgame you "CAN" change into an Alien Multitool, it's only better in Damage bonus, worse in the other two, but money wise you already have anything, but it's faster to kill things...
(these pistols you can always completely ignore, even A class even S class!)
To refuse the 2nd picture, I need to have a MT with grenades and scanner maxed-out of about 16 slots. I would then say its' not worth because I can find a 24-slot of any class at some point which I would cheerfully take.
B is a pistol, you will never find a max slot pistol.
A is a rifle, max bonus on rifle is 25% but they easily reach the max number of slots.
So pistol early game/beginner MT (only if you cant afford all S-rank modules yet)
Rifle mid/end game. (when you can afford all the S-rank modules you need)
Alien/experimental ultimate. (S-rank one with max slot, time to start to min-max modules)
Uh, why? I get the 24 slot rifle 9 times out of 10 the moment I get the hyperdrive quest. There have been a more than a coincidental abundance of them whenever I start the game. In fact there seem to be more 24 slot rifles at the start than later on. In an hour or two of playing usually everything comes together at that point and you can easily afford it, only about 3 million for one. That's 3 or 4 abandoned buildings to raid...easily done in an hour. And they are not hidden at the start, in fact part of the starting quest SENDS you to one or two. So you don't even have to look for them hardly.
Haven't you noticed the first trip to the first Space Station usually has a 23-24 slot rifle? You may not have nanites, but you can build blueprint upgrades and plan out the layout far in advance by getting a high slot rifle up front, as the beginner multi tool is really bad. I wouldn't hold on to it past the first system.
And now that you can get storage containers right after fixing your ship, the urgency to upgrade the ship first is deflated massively.
But on my latest playtrough, I struggled to find one....finally earned a broken one from a monolith that I had to repair entirely...
Well usually at the first space station, I try to get the plasma launcher BP first thing, then I go farm floating crystals to get a stack of superoxyde crystals to be able to equip a plasma launcher on my multi-tools even if they are crap, untill I find a 24 slots one... that way I can easily break into facilities to steal BPs :P
But I've never found a good MT at a space station yet....except with Vykeens gifts.
