2 copper -> 1 chromatic metal
1 chromatic metal + 1 copper -> 4 copper
So this means you gained 1 copper for each 3 you start with.
This also works for cadmium/emeril/indium
You can also get chromatic metal from one of the frigate types if you land on it.
One stack Em refines to 475 Chromatic Metal. Refine one stack of CM + the other stack of EM for another four stacks of EM plus 175 CM leftover. Rinse & repeat.
Or just equip your starship with a fully upgraded positron ejector (fragments supercharger + 6 S-rank modules)... when you got the "hostile scan detected", stop moving. Check your surrounding to spot the circles marking where the hostile ships will arrive, switch to your positron ejector and aim at those circles. When you ear the "hostile ships approaching" press fire and grab the loot.
No need to be good at fighting with a spaceship sized high-magazine automatic shotgun (aka the positron ejector), all you need is to have all your targets in front of you and at firing range once.
