Just buy it in wealthy systems when you see it in space station terminals. Buy a good quantity, you need it for various things, for frigate repairs, for broken tech units on planets, for a lot of receipes etc.
Same for Gold, Silver, Pure Ferite, Magnetized Ferite, Copper. Always have about 500-1000 of it, or you will always run to get it which is no good.
Only things that are really worth to craft are objects which pay 1M+ like Explosives, Fusion Reactors etc.
The gold silver refine is handy if newer players want to quickly repair a frigate as you can get gold and silver readily from shooting space rocks. Platinum rocks are rare.
But yeah otherwise just stockpile on a summonable spare ship.
