Define a potato
I keep seeing people blaming bad performance on potato PCs .... at what point is a pc a potato and unable to run this game smoothly?

a potato of one man's can be a good enough for an other one...
I'm one with low expctations, because I don't blame games for my older computer
I have a decent experience with my I5 4690K @3.5Ghz / 16Gb RAM / Gtx 1050Ti

but ofc that will look horrible for others.
So I would happily qualify my PC as a med range potato, that can still do some decent job, for a decent overall price

There are these things known as minimum requirements that games usually post. Usually anything near that minimum requirement is considered a 'potato'. It may run, but if you want smooth you should be looking at the recommended requirements. Also something that games post.

I tend to say anything 10 years old qualifies as a potato. 5 years old usually is a low end machine. Of course if you rock the greatest hardware available from that time then maybe not. I7 2700k is old as ♥♥♥♥ yet a very capable CPU for example.

An erect South American herb (Solanum tuberosum) of the nightshade family widely cultivated for its edible starchy tuber.
^Doesn't run PC games well, obviously.

A potato is anyone with a fx6000 and up

Like me, fx6100 / gtx 950 / 16gb

Game barely maintain 35 - 50 fps with all settings to mid / txaa / hbao / godrays / 1360x768

Even many players runs the game on a phenon x4
I have an i5 4670K, 16gb ram, and a GTX 960. I can run this game no problem on a mix of medium/high at 1920x1080 with some AA.

People who can't run it are using way outdated components or are using JUNK made by AMD.

Im not saying that the game doesn't need optimization but the biggest issue with not just this game but all games, isn't 100% the game itself.

Quite often and more often then not.. its people going out and buying the latest and greatest of everything before there is sufficient driver support, or just support in general

Not only that.. to be perfectly honest PC stands for POTENTIALY COMPATIBLE
Not every component of your pc has been designed to run with every other part.
It may have been at the time.. but tomorrow is a new day with a new set of technology

Alot of people dont realise that they have buiilt a computer with parts that are not fully compatible with other parts.. be it a motherboard that doesn't like the type of gfx card.
Or an out dated bios that will run your SSD/PCIE card but not well unless it is updated.
Some parts just dont work well with others not matter what you do.

This works the same for game developing too.
We cant expect them to build games with every single pc component in mind as well as every single combination that they can be used in.
There will be issues. They can only flesh it out as best as possible.. but to expect perfect...is just unrealistic.
Hell even windows 10 forced me to upgrade my old secondary gfx card because its kernel didn't match my newer one. So I couldn't run them at the same time.

There is plenty of compatibility documentation available when building a PC to ensure maximum success but even that documentation becomes obsolete as drivers and firmware are updates.
Most people just dont bother reading them or even looking for them.

Companies aren't going to spend every second of the day, scrolling the whole net for new tech that they may have to make thier product compatible with.
The game would never leave the concept stage.
They do to a degree.. but not in excess after some time.

PC components and hardware are ever changing and constantly evolving.
There is no such thing as a potatoe... there is just compatible and not.
Ive got a pc over 5 years old.. running a 970 as my main gfx.
The only updated component is my PCIE HDD that I use for my operating system.. thats only 2-3 years old. lol (Had to upgrade my bios and fiddle with it just to get it too work)
I play on a 27" monitor at 1920x1080 with a wealth of other apps and programs running all over my 3 other screens.

Im yet to find a game that I cant get at least 60fps on with high to epic settings.
One thing I will say though.. is I always turn down or off my shadows. So yes I compensate in a way.
Everything else is right up there and running smooth!!!!
Before building my pc I took the time to go over everything and be as sure as I could be that everything was compatible. Even when purchasing a pcie hdd, I had several options and through research I found this one to be the most likely to be compatible..
So far so good!!!!

Especially when sour cream, butter and chives are added into the mix...

My CPU is 7 1/2 years old. Xeon X5675 6c/12t @ 4.7GHz. My single threaded performance is faster than a Threadripper 1950x, and my multithread performance is faster than an i7 7700k.

Some hardware ages like a fine wine :)

I have an 11 year old Dell with 2 Xeon 5150's and a GTX 660.
MNS runs slow, roughly 25 to 30 fps on medium settings @ 1080p but it is smooth.
So it's very playable. For me :)

Yeah no... You have better multithreading sure but in actual performance you aren't beating the i7 7700k and especially the 8700k enough to justify 1000 dollars more. In gaming multithreading is useless. Raw horsepower. My R5 1600X destroys that Xeon. Especially in cost.

The threadripper absolutely blows that Xeon out of the dam water. Hell in the value market no Intel chip comes close. Few Intels can match its performance to boot.

The game was playable on my ancient core duo (8gB gtx950) but only just. CPU was always maxed out.

The new rig is the budget coffee lake i5 8400 (6 core) and never gets over 50% CPU.

(I went Intel because it does not care about RAM speed and getting good fast RAM for an AMD setup costs a fortune where I live)
