To trade, make it your primary ship, and fine another ship to exchange it for.
If you want to remove one of your ships and trade it for a better one, it must be your active ship when you do the trade with the NPC.
Go to a trade outpost, you can summon more than one of your ships and land them in the landing pads.
With your visor you can know the class of the ship and the price, you don't need to talk with the NPC. When you see a good deal hop in the ship you want to trade, so is active, and talk with the NPC.
Go to a trading post (after scanning with my fav ship).
Get there and stand on the top of the building where I can see all the landing pads.
As soon as I see a ship I want (by scanning and sometimes while they're still coming far away in the sky), I summon the space ship I want to trade in - from the top of the building you can summon any ship to land on the ground just between the landing pads.
This method allows me to, depending on the ship that comes, summon the the ship I want to trade. Sometimes you're with a ship you want to trade for a hauler, let's say, but a cool fighter comes to the landing pad and you summon your crappy fighter instead of trading the ship you're flying atm.
As for summoning you ship, my solution was to summon them all on the ground next to a trading post on a planet. Then when I see a ship I might want to trade, just hop in and out of the one of that type. Next jet up to the landing pads and make your deal.
