I did mine only jumping to higher rated economy, it's still just random what class you get.
If you're getting the hard-coded third warp regular freighter rescue mission via ship comm, that's normal.
Those are not the same as capital freighter battles. Capital freighter battles will already be in progress when you jump into the system, and you'll enter the system practically on top of the capital freighter.
Those battles are 'gated' in a sense. You only start getting them after a certain number of warps, I think you need the milestone for 10 warps before they'll start spawning. After that, they're gated by both time played (unpaused) and number of warps. Assuming you clear the time requirement, they'll spawn roughly every 5 warps.
Now, the trick is to land at a station and save before each warp. When your time is 'up' for a capital battle, and you warp into one, if you dislike the look of that freighter reload the game and warp to any other random system. Each system will have a different capital freighter model. Then, when you find one you like, kill off the pirates, land on the freighter, and check the stats. If you don't like 'em, reload, and warp again to that same system, and keep save-scumming until you're happy with the stats / slots / rank, all of which are independent of the physical freighter 'model'.
I hope I covered everything, but feel free to shoot any questions my way.
Also, some people claim that you need to have at least 8 hours in your saves 'time played' counter (visible on the main menu when choosing a slot) before capital freighter battles will happen, in addition to the minimum number of warps required. I never tested this theory, as by the time I get to my 10th warp I'm always well past the 8 hour mark. It's probably a myth, tho.

Edit: Next to a station for size comparison.

And yes, I am (er, was, with a save there) on the first, scripted rescue mission, but I know for a fact that you can get capital-sized ships (a.k.a. the size that can be 34 slots) on that mission because my brother got a 33-slot class A "star destroyer" on his mission without reloading or anything (that lucky sob).
psaggo, I know the variant is tied to the system. That's what I'm asking, if there's a good way to tell what will spawn in a system before entering it so that I can find a star destroyer type without having to search each and every system.
And yes, Blissett, that's the type I'm looking for. That is the largest of the star destroyer types. Any help you could offer (coords, whatever) would be greatly appreciated.
As far as systems go, blue regions seem to be the best, since the younger stars haven't yet been exhausted of resources and they're more difficult to reach. Red regions are more likely to be filled with dead (and defective) planets while yellow regions have more biologically lush planets that are still too primitive to be profitable for an ancient galactic empire. Green is sort of a mix, since they're often radioactive and every advanced culture needs power, but nobody really wants to live on Dagobah. If you want to run with the big dogs your best bet is to get your hands on a decent fighter with an indium drive and ride straight into Dodge with all your guns blazing.
May the Force be with you!

Here are the coordinates for the system that spawned my freighter:
UZBE:065A:0080:0132:013C
It's a medium economy, so it should be possible to keep at it until you get it in S rank with 34 slots, but I just cared for the slots as I'm mainly warping with my regular ships, so I took the first 34 slotter that was offered. Still took a few reloads.
115 million for the A version with max slots, if I recall.
You can google for Pilgrim Star Path to find the website that tells you how far away from those coordinates you are and to help you plot a warp course to it, as well as to convert it into portal glyphs and such if you so wish.
The name of the system is Zaxoisar XIII.
If you're ever in the area, there are two high wealth economy systems relatively close to that one system that spawn the same model of freighter in black and blue, another that spawns it almost completely in yellow, and at least one with a black and blue max-size Sentinel freighter. I seem to have erased my notes on those specific systems since I ended up never saving after warping to them, so I no longer have any specifics.
Note that I mean the general 'grouping' when I say high wealth, not a specific in-game economy scanner descriptor. If memory serves, one was described as Advanced and one was Wealthy.
Good luck in your freighter hunting. :D
Sooooo, if there is a trick, it's at least to search in blue systems, and waiting until after the first offer to accept one probably couldn't hurt either.
But as I said, my brother found a class A 33-slot Venator (medium or large, I forget) in a yellow system on his first rescue, so... yeah.
The system color doesn't really affect anything as far as I can tell. My large star destroyer came from a blue system but that was incidental (I warped there looking for Indium and was greeted by the very large freighter). While save-scumming to get it with max slots I jumped to a few neighboring yellow systems and found other large ones, but I didn't like the colors.
If being particularly selective, it's probably advisable to go to high wealth systems[nomanssky.gamepedia.com] for the increased chance of it spawning as S rank.
Anyway, congratulations on your new freighter :)
2 Stop
3 Wait a few seconds and then check the purple tags
4 Goto 1
Every system has it's own freighter models and going in the same system again gives the same looking freighter but another class and more or less storage.
Did i understand right, that if i don't take the first free freighter and do some warp jumps after another 3 hours of gameplay i can get a capital freighter for free or do I have to pay for it than?
ooooo.
