The filter shows you different things, for example the race filter will show all systems owned by hykeen to be red, regardless of what color the actual star has.

But (and sorry it won't help you much) somewhat it's bad too for peeps not beeing colorblind (at least for stars colors) IMO... so that says a lot.
Filters for non colorblind are much better, but if memory serves, most colors used may be indeed painful to separate.
And I haven't seen any setting to change for "colorblind"
You should really drop a ticket to HG and bring that up
The default filter of the map uses four colors: yellow for (normal) yellow star systems, red for (cadmium) red star systems, green for (emeril) green star systems, blue for (indium) blue star systems. A good way to know if a system is yellow is if you set your path to the galactic center only yellow systems will be on the path.
The Lifeform filter uses the colors: red for Vykeen systems, yellow for Gek systems, and blue for Korvax systems, and also white for non inhabited systems (usually the red/blue/green star systems).
The economy filter has a lot more variants so I won't bother trying to list them all and since if you have an economy scanner anyway you can just read the economy info, same goes for conflict.
Hopefully that helps or HG thinks to put colorblind options in the game for those with your condition.

On another issue (also colour related) - If you are not colourblind, can you see (when your scanner is up) if you have scanned a planetary object (flora, fauna etc) already? Animals are a little easier to spot with a filled in dot - but minerals and plants I cannot tell.
Sometimes, it seems like there might be a different overlay colour for unscanned items - but I only see that rarely - or maybe I'm imagining it. So I usually look at the info box on the left to see if I have scanned or not - just slows things down a bit, but have been wondering for a while if it just me that can't tell from the overlay colour alone.
