Waypoints - what's the point?
What is the point of waypoints bar the discovery reward?

There doesn't appear to be a way to travel back to them once discovered, so what exactly is the point of them?

You can travel back manually and I think they are for mapping out planets you liked and want to keep track off.

Pretty pointless. There should be a damn hud option to see them.......

How do you travel back manually when you can't see them anywhere except in the log?

Two other good things about waypoints:

- You can set a manual waypoint any time you want on any spot. This is useful if you're exploring a remote area without another good landmark, for instance, and want to use the waypoint as a guidepost so you don't accidentally get turned around. Also good for marking a cave exit, for example, if you go spelunking.

- As of Next there are often objects buried just under the ground, the waypoint tells you where to dig.

Flying low over the planet hoping you find it again is the only way. Which is pathetic and lazy on the devs part.
I guess you could craft beacons to make it more visible. Not sure how high up that red beam goes though, never tried it.

OK, that sounds useful, but if I go back to a planet now - how do I find the waypoint for a specific region on that planet?

Even if I cruise about in my ship it doesn't tell me which region I'm in and without a panetary map, I have no idea how they link to one another.

Are we talking local waypoints here on a planet or waypoints set for planets in the discovery tab?

Exactly - Unfinished game features i say
I hope they update/fix this later.

Every PoI we unlock should be cataloged and saved at which point should you want to return we should be able to go to our discoveries tab and click on one to track.

The only way you can find one you have been to now is to slowly and meticulously fly flow and look for it, since they all look the same good luck!
Unless you have a Very good memory that is

What
it's so you can explore the planet?
You don't need to go back to them later why would you even want to
it's just an extra way to earn nanites

Because I found a drop box and then lost it, so would like to find my way back.

Signal boost and scanning aren't finding it, but I at least know which area of the planet it's on.

I just can't find a way to get back there.

Satisfied?

Waypoints are to let you know you've been there already, so if say you're hunting Drop Pod locations and you see the waypoint doesn't say "Uncharted, Save and Chart" You know you either wasted your time landing there or wasted a drop pod navigation data.

So we can keep track of areas we have explored and may or may not want to return to.
Also some people like exploring the entirety of a planet, not just a tiny fracture of it before jumping to another one.
Immersion?
Some players at some point like to settle down on one planet for a long time building elaborate buildings here and there. Having that feature would add to this.

Drop box? unless you mean drop pod, which i assume you do, you can always repair them with on hand materials so leaving is always a mistake, lesson learned. As for beacons just do the quests to get the beacon blueprint so you can put beacons down should you have to leave. The problem solves itself because beacons exist, there's little to no POIs worth remembering otherwise.

It might make it easier to find your way back to a specific point if you rename every system where you are the first to visit. Too bad most people wont' think of this until 20 hours into the game. Also, once you get to The Portal in the Artemis quest, you are taken to another region of the galaxy, so you might be totally S.O.L. unless you renamed your base and installed a teleporter.

You can mark places on your hud with a beacon. Sadly, only 5 per planet.

The waypoint discovery.. yeah, it's useless. We should be able to activate it on our hud.
