Fixed my Artemis quest that disappeared and bugged Base Specialist
I know I'm not the only one that has had quests disappear or not work for whatever reason. In my case the Artemis quest completely disappeared before making the "Mind Arc" as well as my Armorer never gave me a single quest after hiring him.

I was getting pretty frustrated but started looking into posts and noticed people tinkering with their save file and I managed to fix both my quests. This may not work for everyone or may take some trial and error to find the point in the quest/spot in the file you need to change but in my case it was straight forward.

What you will need:

1. NMS Save editor from github (Not sure if I can link it here, just google it)

2. Your save file (BACKUP THE FILE BEFORE TRYING THIS FIX)

Extract the editor to its own folder anywhere. Then you need to locate and backup your save. In your windows search bar type "%appdata%" without quotes and push enter, a new window will open. Locate the "HelloGames" folder, inside that the NMS folder, and in that is a folder that should be named "st_(and a bunch of numbers)" Copy that entire folder somewhere for safe keeping but leave the original in place.

Now, open the NMS save editor, you want to use the executable file which is the largest file of the lot, it should have a java graphic for the icon. It should ask you to choose a save path upon opening for the first time, it should immediately pop up to the NMS folder, have a username (in my case) followed by the "st_(lots of numbers)" file. Click your save and click open.

Next you will be on the "main" tab of the editor. It will show file details as well as the save path. Below that are 2 drop down boxes. Choose the slot number/difficulty your save is in, and save file should auto fill. At this point you'll have a lot of options to cheat, if you want to, One thing I did was go to the discovery tab and check all the known glyphs because I was also affected by the glyph bug.

Now for the reason you're here. At the top of the window click "edit" and choose "edit Raw JSON" a new window will pop up and this is where we will be working. Make sure on the left pane that your save is highlighted (it should be by default) on the right you're going to see lots of lines of code.

Press control + f to open a find/search box. Depending on what part of the Artemis quest you were on when it broke or disappeared you will need to do some searching. The Artemis quests are labeled as ACT1_STEP(1,2,3,etc)... You need to search starting with "ACT1" and keep hitting "find" in the search box until it can't find anything else. Make note of the last "step" and then try searching for "ACT2" and do the same, and then ACT3....

If there is no ACT2 or ACT3 go to the last step that shows up for ACT1 and underneath that line will be a line labeled "Progress" with a number next to it. Replace the number there with "-1" without quotes. So if it says ("Progress":27,) change it to ("Progress":-1,)

Now if you had an ACT2 or ACT3 in your files, you'll want to go to the last step for those and do the same thing as outlined above. So if you have an ACT3, you'll only want to change the last step of that act and leave ACT1 and 2 alone.

Once that is changed you'll want to close the JSON editor window, it will have a prompt that pops up saying changes were made and do you want to save, choose yes. Then on the editor, go back to the "main" tab, click save changes and close the editor.

From this point you can load up your game and assuming everything went as planned, your quest should be back in your log and you can continue with it, you might have lost a bit of progress than you had previously (probably not) but at least you will have it back.

...........................................................................

Now the steps for the Armorer or any other base specialist is similar, just the names are different. You want to get to the point where you're "editing the Raw JSON file" again only this time instead of searching for ACT's you're searching for the specialist.

In my case my Armorer never gave me a quest. The Armorer is different in that he's not named the same in the file. He's actually named "WEAPGUY" so in his case, you'll want to search for him, The quests appear to be labeled as "WEAPGUY1", WEAPGUY2, etc...1 being the first quest and then 2, 3, and so on.

So find the last entry for your specialist with a number, change the progress below that to "-1" and save, reload your game and your quest should be fixed. In my case the Armorer would now speak to me and give me quests.

This should work for other specialists that either dropped your quest or possibly are bugged and won't let you turn in items. Just search for their name, with the latest number in your file and change the progress.

Here are the terms to search for as an easy reference:

Artemis questline; "ACT1, ACT2, ACT3"

Armorer questline; "WEAPGUY1, WEAPGUY2, etc"

Scientist questline; "SCIENTIST1, SCIENTIST2, etc"

Farmer questline; "FARMER1, FARMER2, etc"

Overseer questline; "OVERSEER1, OVERSEER2, etc"

I unfortunately am not sure about the Exocraft specialist, if you have issues with him, you might need to play around and search for him.

Always make sure to backup your save file before doing this. If you mess up, just replace the save file in the appdata/hellogames/nms folder. I'd recommend backing up, testing a change, if it works then make that your new main save and back that up and move on to a fix for any other issues you have.

Hopefully this helps some people... and apologies in advance. I'm not some tutorial whiz, I'm hoping this isn't too hard to follow, it's pretty straight forward once you get into it.

Definitely backup your save before trying this but you could search the JSON for "START_BASE_UP" and set it's progress to -1.

I don't know if this will work for you but it's worth a shot.

I entered the text "ACT1". But he says "Text not found!". I checked my older savegame and he found it. It looks like the Artemis Quest did not even start. But I had to do lots of missions (2-3) to getting warp cells stuff. Is that not Artermis? I mean I saw the Artermis mission sign (red with white kind a crescent moon) and I rememeber someone call to me ship. How it can be? Now I have only 2 primary mission (Anomaly and Atlas) and I can only discover. Even I haven't the secondary mission "Base Computer Archives". How can I get terminals now? Need help, please :(

Having the same issue! Mine is note showing up at all. I travelled back to the old system and everything. Any ideas?

Alright. I was about 13 hours into the game, in my third system and had yet to come across a freighter battle or the signal from Artemis. I checked my save file and there was no "ACT1" so I thought I was hosed, but I was not... Here's what I did:

I traveled back to my first system but first traveled back to the second system. When I got to system two I got into a freighter battle and snagged myself a free B-Class freighter. Yay! I digress...

When I traveled back to my starter system I got a message from Artemis and all was golden.

THAT BEING SAID...

Some of you have already tried what I've done and it didn't work out. I can dig that, so what I've done is copy my save file data for "ACT1" below. In my save data the information was below "Mission":"^DM_SCIENCE" and above "Mission":"^SMG".

Caveats/Suggestions:
  1. If you choose to paste-in the code I've pasted below YOU DO SO AT YOUR OWN RISK, please do not hate me if it doesn't work. I still love you. ;-)
  2. I don't know if it matters where you put the code listed below in your save file.
  3. I don't know if pasting the code below into your save file will work with 100% certainty, but I suspect it will.
  4. I'm not sure that it matters, but I've included the indents as they are in my save file. When pasting make sure it is after the last }, in the "DM_SCIENCE" entry, if that's where you decide to put it.
  5. I did a few things for Artemis before I grabbed the code, so please follow the steps in OP's post for setting the "Progress" section of the code, unless you want to miss out on the start of the quest.
  6. If you choose to paste-in FIRST ENSURE YOUR SAVES ARE BACKED UP
  7. Probably doesn't need to be said, but make sure you're not running the game when you paste-in the code, and I'm not even sure you could open the save file for editting if NMS is running.
  8. If you have questions about any of this I will try to help, but am not remotely close to being an expert, so my best answer may well be, "I don't know, sorry."

THAT BEING SAID... HERE's THE CODE:

{ "Mission":"^ACT1_STEP1", "Progress":6, "Seed":0, "Data":0, "Participants":[ { "UA":0, "BuildingSeed":[ true, "0x0" ], "ParticipantType":{ "ParticipantType":"None" } }, { "UA":0, "BuildingSeed":[ true, "0x0" ], "ParticipantType":{ "ParticipantType":"MissionGiver" } }, { "UA":0, "BuildingSeed":[ true, "0x0" ], "ParticipantType":{ "ParticipantType":"Primary" } }, { "UA":0, "BuildingSeed":[ true, "0x0" ], "ParticipantType":{ "ParticipantType":"Secondary1" } }, { "UA":0, "BuildingSeed":[ true, "0x0" ], "ParticipantType":{ "ParticipantType":"Secondary2" } }, { "UA":0, "BuildingSeed":[ true, "0x0" ], "ParticipantType":{ "ParticipantType":"Secondary3" } }, { "UA":0, "BuildingSeed":[ true, "0x0" ], "ParticipantType":{ "ParticipantType":"Secondary4" } }, { "UA":0, "BuildingSeed":[ true, "0x0" ], "ParticipantType":{ "ParticipantType":"Secondary5" } }, { "UA":0, "BuildingSeed":[ true, "0x0" ], "ParticipantType":{ "ParticipantType":"Secondary6" } }, { "UA":0, "BuildingSeed":[ true, "0x0" ], "ParticipantType":{ "ParticipantType":"Secondary7" } }, { "UA":0, "BuildingSeed":[ true, "0x0" ], "ParticipantType":{ "ParticipantType":"Secondary8" } }, { "UA":0, "BuildingSeed":[ true, "0x0" ], "ParticipantType":{ "ParticipantType":"Secondary9" } } ] },

I hope this was able to help some folks.

Cheers, fellow Travelers...

everytime i try to open the raw json editor the save game editor just freeze. would love to fix this broken quest as well

Miyo, when your json file is too big, it will freeze the NMS Save Editor. You can use Notepad++ instead with a plugin called JSTool :nwkey:

Playing NMS in multiplayer I missed the first message from Artemis while my NMS veteran friends (who were well ahead of me) were chatting etc. I now have many hours in game, but no main storyline...

Is it possible to edit the save file to receive the very first Artemis message again?

I'll re-read the thread above but didn't see anyone with the same problem (I think). Thank you for any help. Din;t want to post new thread, this seemed related at least.

Afaik, the first step of artemis quest is labeled ACT1_STEP1 in your savegame. You can set progress to -1 and it reboots the quest. I had to do it for some other steps and it worked.
Bandy 18 AGO 2018 a las 6:39 p. m.
I used save editor, searched for ACT1 and there was nothing, no ACT missions at all. I copy/pasted the code just above, and set progress at -1. However, many but not all of the other missions (most with -1 progress) had:

"Seed":1534647600, while your code has "Seed":0, so not sure if that matters... It is not my player ID number on the save file. I left it at zero, so made no difference AFAIK, I got the message which I swear I never got earlier, so can progress in the main quest finally.

Mant thanks to Avengersoul and Ŋ€ØŁ¥ŊΧ and to all those who enjoy this wonderful game. Trolls suck...

Great! I'm still not sure about "Seed" and "UA" for questlines xD I hope to figure it out someday but for now I'm trying to fix the multiplayer scan bug and thats for another thread.

My Artemis quest disappeard right before the portal step, where you were sent to that far away galaxy. I needed to repair my ship after transporting and teleported back to my base, when I did, the quest disappeard from the quest log. If I set the number to -1 I'll lost the progress. Could I set the number to the step before this stage in the quest, like before the portal?
Jack Saint 23 AGO 2018 a las 8:47 a. m.
My quest stops at ACT2_STEP4 I believe, the mission disappeared from the log, if I set ONLY the ACT2_STEP4 or other steps from ACT2, will it work or will I break my save?
Jack Saint 23 AGO 2018 a las 8:59 a. m.
I changed only the progress for ACT2_STEP4, my last step and the quest didn't appear.
