if you make a world and he joins it, he starts fresh on your world(save).
You COULD have him copy his save and zip it to you.... but any work on your machine would stay on your machine, and vice versa... If he did something there and you did something on yours, and sent the zip to him, his stuff would be deleted....
Basic Rule of Co-Op, the person who plays the most and covers most player's play hours should be the host.
UNLESS you have a third account and machine to host, take one slot of the four, and leave it open.... but that has it's own perils.
Your save in the progress stays with you... The position may change but that's all... I've been playing with a friend and have not had any problems. We can both play the save we have and make progress that stays... Don't have to be both in same game....
