How's the multiplayer work in NMS?
Title. Does it have server and stuff, or is it like p2p or something like that?

With the Next update you can join a friend's game or have them join your game. When you spawn, it puts you in the same system as the person you joined. Friends in your game are now easy to find with the addition of a black silhouette icon to track them and the pulse drive will lock onto them for easy following. The player icon is also visible in the galaxy map to help find someone once they leave the system.

A friend joined me with a new game and it started him on a planet in my home system, without a starship just like if you started a new game without joining someone. The sad part is that it started him on a scorched planet instead of my paradise planet. Just a quick ride to the other planet and I was able to join up with him and help him survive a fire storm.

I joined another friend's game and loaded my save file and was loaded into space in my ship in the system he was in. I had my complete inventory and was able to call my other ships, including my capital ship.

I think people in your friend list can join your games, or you can join to other players.

A player is the host. Others can join your session as long as you didnt disable it or you can join others. No overall server, just some players internet xD

player hosted and locally saved...
no servers for the core game you play.

If you just are in the same system, you'll see players as orbs you can't interact with. To interact with a player, you have to join their game from the main menu (either a friend or completely random).

Ah i see. Can you force to kick other player from your game or other will be able to join you no matter what as long as you are connected to the internet?

You can disable the "joined by randoms" part, though it's not obvious. You have to disable online play. For some reason friends can still join, if I remember correctly some thread about it I saw here a few days ago.

Ok thats the info i needed. Thanks a lot! I might gonna buy the game since it looks promising now, just curious how the multiplayer experience will be

multiplayer is a nice feature so long as you have friends to play with. i had a random join my game last night and he was in for about 20 mins before leaving, never saw or ran into him. maybe it might be different the closer you get to the galactic core, might run into many more people in those areas.
The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

Well making new friends that got the game should be easy rather than trying to convince your friend to play it with you XD

very true, if you do end up getting the game feel free to add me. will be more than happy to join you or vice versa....it gets really boring running around an ice planet harvesting di-hydrogen alone xD
