My support ships are consistently finishing 2 stars being combined 3 star. The other frig types are totalling 4 or 5 stars combined. I had an awful time trying to complete expeditions using my own fleet compositions when someone told me to use 5 of the same type matched to the expedition type. When I started doing that I stopped failing completely.
The kind of design choices that went into the game... makes you wonder if Hello Games even takes NMS seriously at all. Yes they fix bugs but at the same time are nerfing overall profitability. It seems they are intent in forcing people into a mundane grind to stretch play time. And yet the duplication glitch still works. For me I bought this game while it was on sale to pass time. And that's about all its good for.
It has potential, but I have no faith in HG ever using it. Simple things like player inventory being able to have more slots than any currently obtainable ship or freighter, just plain makes no sense. As well as the procedural UI and interaction which was made only for controller but is utter garbage for mouse/keyboard. Sometimes when playing I wonder to myself if going through all the hassle to achieve one thing is even worth my time at all.
You don't get anything worthwhile or much in Credits considering it's over 10Mil just to recruit a Fleet... Takes some time to complete each Expedition, Repairing Firgates is a complete PITA and the cost in Frigate fuel to make and equip on each expedition is ridicioulous!
Personally I hope in future updates that we get more missions.
Some player s like them some don't, and it is ok. But don't say it is not worth it.
Just give it time.
If you are talking to me, then know that I have been playing NMS since first launch, and have over 1550 hours of game play. I know why I play this game, do you? If you can't be patient then go and play on something else that you like and stop complaning. You sound like a 12 years old whom didn't get his little sweety. Sad really.

so far ive made 2 mil on one of these expeditions. have not seen another since. usually around 250k credits
To run them AFK you need to send fleets that will not take damage. Here are the basic rules:
1) The game runs an encounter against your entire fleets stat for that encounter type. This means if you are doing lets say a Trade expedition you need to maximise the trade stat. Send all trade ships not a mixed fleet. Once your ships stats are up a bit you can swap in a support frigate to save fuel and time but initially just maximise the trade/whatever stat of the expedition
2) doing things like sending a combat ship "for defence" on a trade or industrial mission is detrimental. The encounters only look at your stats for the encounter type. Combat ships are good for actual combat missions or balanced missions or just parking near your freighter as they can help with pirate attacks in system.
3) for "balanced missions" try and get all stats as high as possible. Generally this means sending at least one of each ship type. The fifth ship type can be support or a second ship of your weakest stat
4) always make sure your fleets are at least one, preferably two or three, stars above expedition level.
5) if you have a poor fleet send it on short mission as they have more chance of getting back undamaged and levelling up before they roll badly on an encounter and take damage
6) the best thong to do with low level fresh ships is send them out as the "5th man" with a more competent fleet until they get levels
7) it does seem like the type of missions you run with a ship effect what stats it levels up. This is not confirmed either way at present but may be worth doing to see if you can "tweak" a ships stats.
Greyed out usually means you already completed that expedition and have to wait for the reset timer.
This.
Do the leve 1 types, and made them level up, than when all of them at least B class or better try higher ones.
And don't be mistaken, even when the mission tells you its just an industrial oriented mission or other, its still happening the other type of event in them, like you bring your mining ships but the pirates still happening...etc.
Think about that way, oriented missions with random events.
