Expeditions not worth it?
So I started using the expeditions yesterday, and as far as I can tell they're really not worth it?

I bought enough frigates to have a full compliment and some variation when doing expeditions (I have 1 explorer, 2 industrial, 2 combat, 1 support and 1 trade) - each C-class frigate costs between 1.5 and 2.5 million, the B classes two or three times that again.

For a basic five frigate buy-in you're looking at spending around 10 million.

A successful three hour expedition came back with just shy of 150k credits, 2 korvax casings and 45 Indium. I sent them off on a second similar expedition, but it was unsuccessful and I got about half the yield, with all my ships damaged. The repair cost wasn't enormous, but having to fly to each one in turn and run around them repairing the nodes was time consuming, it took about an hour.

It just seems like it's genuinely not worth the hassle? If a successful expedition comes back with around 200k worth of goods, you'd need to do *fifty* successful expeditions just to get your initial investment back - and realistically you're probably only going to send them off once or twice per day since it takes 1-4 hours each time (real time, mercifully, rather than game time).

Thing is, for that hour it took to repair everything, I could have just earned what both expeditions brought back in six hours.

Am I missing something or is it really not worth it?

Still getting 100% on mine as long as I send 5 of the same out matching the expedition type. I can even send 5 C class support ships out on a balanced expedition and they complete with no problems.

I would assume sending out 5 increases your fleet rating dramatically. Older information was that your fleet only had to be 1 star higher in rating to complete an expedition. Methinks they've changed the odds on this.

Possible now that you want atleast a 2 star buffer in rating in order to gurantee success perhaps?

My support ships are consistently finishing 2 stars being combined 3 star. The other frig types are totalling 4 or 5 stars combined. I had an awful time trying to complete expeditions using my own fleet compositions when someone told me to use 5 of the same type matched to the expedition type. When I started doing that I stopped failing completely.

Frigates are a conundrum in reality. They passively give you materials even if they are not sent on expeditions. But the cost of the frigates... if you can afford them in the first place you probably don't need them working for you at all. And then you have to personally board them to fix them yourself. The net effect, for me at least, is they become time sinks in exchange for nothing useful.

The kind of design choices that went into the game... makes you wonder if Hello Games even takes NMS seriously at all. Yes they fix bugs but at the same time are nerfing overall profitability. It seems they are intent in forcing people into a mundane grind to stretch play time. And yet the duplication glitch still works. For me I bought this game while it was on sale to pass time. And that's about all its good for.

It has potential, but I have no faith in HG ever using it. Simple things like player inventory being able to have more slots than any currently obtainable ship or freighter, just plain makes no sense. As well as the procedural UI and interaction which was made only for controller but is utter garbage for mouse/keyboard. Sometimes when playing I wonder to myself if going through all the hassle to achieve one thing is even worth my time at all.

When I started doing them, my fleet always had same rating or 1 higher, you can finish them even with same rating, but it seemed like there's 1/3 chance of getting damage.

The ROI SUCKS!!!

You don't get anything worthwhile or much in Credits considering it's over 10Mil just to recruit a Fleet... Takes some time to complete each Expedition, Repairing Firgates is a complete PITA and the cost in Frigate fuel to make and equip on each expedition is ridicioulous!

Here's an example. 2 star industrial expedition. I send out 5 industrial frigs, 4 of which are basic C class, and I'm 2 points shy of having a 5 star fleet. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1476825225

Having frigates is a long time investment. I don't expect a return on the investment I made in one week. I have a fleet of 27 frigates (11 of those S Class). I send 5 frigates on every missions and the rating of my combine frigates is 5 stars. Is it worth it? Hell yeah. The amount of resources and units they bring back is unsane. I stop repairing my frigates since sending five of them per missions. I also have the blueprint for the special gear you can add to the frigates. Fuel cost doesn't matter beacuse it pays it self from the reward I get.

Personally I hope in future updates that we get more missions.
Some player s like them some don't, and it is ok. But don't say it is not worth it.

in time u will find out a lot of things in nms are not worth it.
Just give it time.

If you are talking to me, then know that I have been playing NMS since first launch, and have over 1550 hours of game play. I know why I play this game, do you? If you can't be patient then go and play on something else that you like and stop complaning. You sound like a 12 years old whom didn't get his little sweety. Sad really.

I thought like 4 star expeditions brought in like 500,000.. guess I was wrong!!! Also, why are some expeditions greyed out?? I have ships, fuel, and an extra fleet command center?

6-7 compents damged on each ship ....fix them all and they still show up as damaged .....nice bug totally not worth doing them IMO

They are worth it because of the real time aspect which lets you run missions before you logoff and collect the loot when you come back.

To run them AFK you need to send fleets that will not take damage. Here are the basic rules:

1) The game runs an encounter against your entire fleets stat for that encounter type. This means if you are doing lets say a Trade expedition you need to maximise the trade stat. Send all trade ships not a mixed fleet. Once your ships stats are up a bit you can swap in a support frigate to save fuel and time but initially just maximise the trade/whatever stat of the expedition

2) doing things like sending a combat ship "for defence" on a trade or industrial mission is detrimental. The encounters only look at your stats for the encounter type. Combat ships are good for actual combat missions or balanced missions or just parking near your freighter as they can help with pirate attacks in system.

3) for "balanced missions" try and get all stats as high as possible. Generally this means sending at least one of each ship type. The fifth ship type can be support or a second ship of your weakest stat

4) always make sure your fleets are at least one, preferably two or three, stars above expedition level.

5) if you have a poor fleet send it on short mission as they have more chance of getting back undamaged and levelling up before they roll badly on an encounter and take damage

6) the best thong to do with low level fresh ships is send them out as the "5th man" with a more competent fleet until they get levels

7) it does seem like the type of missions you run with a ship effect what stats it levels up. This is not confirmed either way at present but may be worth doing to see if you can "tweak" a ships stats.

Greyed out usually means you already completed that expedition and have to wait for the reset timer.

people tend to get into a race to the finish frame of mind, I blame mmorpg's for this. With NMS the fastest path to the end is the fastest path past anything interesting in the game. Find what you like doing in the game and take your time to enjoy it.

This.
Swellgrim 12 Thg08, 2018 @ 5:49pm
I'm dont realy mind the reapir, at least cool for looking around, but man, don't send your fleet on a high difficulty mission!
Do the leve 1 types, and made them level up, than when all of them at least B class or better try higher ones.
And don't be mistaken, even when the mission tells you its just an industrial oriented mission or other, its still happening the other type of event in them, like you bring your mining ships but the pirates still happening...etc.
Think about that way, oriented missions with random events.
