Normal vs Survival vs Permadeath
I was on a twitch stream and it was explained to me that in NMS there really aren't many ways to die, so after you get used to the game Survival is just more grindy since you find less resources and things require more resources. & I was told most permadeath runs end because of an unavoidable glitch. Can someone explain the real differences between the modes?

I want the feeling of having to survive in the huge galaxy that we have in NMS, and I don't know if Normal would give me that. On the other hand, I wouldn't want to do Survival and end up being bored because it's more grindy. I also would not want to be 50 hours into a permadeath run and die due to an unavoidable glitch.

Thanks!

Also, is there much of a difference for the "tutorial planet" based on which game mode you pick? I know you have to recharge your oxygen & find your ship and repair it. But I think the only difference for survival / permadeath is you die faster if you don't recharge in time? Is that right and is there anything else different for the starting planet?

I play survival.

Less materials, there really isn't more grind - as with NEXT it's easy to avoid it by trading and buying what you need rather than mine it, and there are more hostile planets (lush planets especially).

When you die in Survival you lose alll your inventory and no grave. It's gone permanently.

There is zero threat from animals. ZERO.
Barely any threat from Sentinels, maybe the last level walkers if you don't have shields.
Pirates are all easy, especially if you get the positron ejector.

There are other little things I can't remember off my head.

Next Survival is easier than pre-next Normal mode. Not happy with how "chill" it is to be honest. Makes NMS boring when there are no threats and all the same missions and sentinel types.

Should I just go with normal? Or do you enjoy the less materials? I think I'd like the more hostile planets, it'd make me more wary of where I choose to go.
General recommendation might be to try a normal first, just to get a feel for the game.

Some folks try a couple of saves at the same time. That way you have a normal testing ground at each stage.

Never tried crispy or extra crispy, but you just need to be very thoughtful, especially in the early stages.

You can search the board for tips from players
another thing to keep in mind if you play multiplayer, your difficulty ties you to which group of people you'll encounter. more people are likely to choose normal then survival, so you mihgt not run into people as often on survival, this could be both nice and lonely. and makes MP encounters a bit more special.

but until they can fix potential griefing issues i suggest turning MP off unless playing with friends.
If you do Permadeath (which I have from day one of NEXT) you definitely want to try and locate any list of death related bugs and avoid them like the plague, lol. I lost a really good save to a teleport glitch that put me inside a wall.

There doesn't appear to be any difference between Permadeath and Survival with the exception of Permadeath wiping your save. If I wasn't so stubborn and wanting to just keep at Permadeath, I'd do Survival for sure. After my Permadeath game I believe I'll go Survival, actually. I can't really see myself doing Normal.

Sometimes you get screwed on starter planets, though. It took me four new Permadeath games before I got to my ship one time. Two deaths were due to having no hazard shield left by the time the startup cutscene ended and finding no sodium or oxygen anywhere nearby and the third death was the game thinking that the two inch hop over a flower was a two hundred foot drop and killed me instantly, lol. I was within sight of my ship too... :(

Ouch! Yeah permadeath just sounds fun to me lol. I'm glad someone else had the idea of doing it from day one. I'll look for a list of death related bugs, dunno when I'll get the game so I'll just look when the time comes.

Hopefully that means people won't grief on permadeath. However, I've read tales of people using save editors. Hopefully no one does that & then griefs in permadeath, that'd ruin everything.

Good idea, I could try the normal startup to get a feel for what to do, then try perma or survival.

I would just go survival. You can always change difficulty editing the json header code in the save file. Easy and safe to do. I converted my save from normal to survival because i wanted a harder experience but not start over (on my legacy save where difficulty wasn;t implemented yet).
if you are realy afraid of losing the save you can always create a backup folder and past the files eache time you close the game .

Oooo. I may do that before I try teleporting to new bases.

There's definitely a chance and clipping kills you when you load into a base since you don't appear AT the teleporter itself but at the base computer. Or at least you did about a month ago or so. That might have gotten patched; not sure.
in my first game on my first base i delete it .
the tp is still here and i spawn at the base computer deleted ..

if you succes to put the computer "inter" the base make a room of 2 up for spawning on top of it and not "tp some feet away".

(i make a french mini guide for the succes center for permadeath with small tips . i don't know if the google trad works with my poor writing)
OR...YOU CAN SIMPLY PLAY SURVIVAL MODE AS PERMADEATH!

So yes there are other ways to avoid loosing P.D progress because of stupid bugs or griefing. anyway, you can play without network no multiplayers or set conditions for other players to meet or join (experimental at least) . Or jump out, exit the game very fast when death is close.

Anyway, you just delete your saved game when you die in a regular way in surivcal mode, making it permadeath in essence. Its requires some discipline buts its your game after all.

the first thing I do when I start a hard mode save (perma death is just not my thing) is look for a cave. the game seems to start you near one every time or at least that's been my exerance. THEN I look in the cave to see if there are any rocks that give sodium or oxigen. If not then I scan while under ground to get an idea where to go when I serface. That's it hope it helps.
Everyone wants the game to be harder, I play permadeath and also want this.

Yes backup your files as a save will be around for a long time so you don't want to lose it over a bug. Though, real life has bugs too...nobody plans to have an accident for example. Play as you like!

That's a great idea. Just in case I die from a glitch, rather than my own doing.
