"The S-Freighter grind"...is it worth it?
So i have a really crappy freighter right now (15 slots C-class). And i really want to build a freighter base. And i really don´t want to spend time building on a freighter that i will trade for later. So i read up on how people get them...it´s a bit varying but it seems like ALOT of work.

1. Play for 3 hours straight...just....why?
2. Warp jump to 5 different systems.
3. Find a rich system...and hope that there is a fight going on when you get there.
4. Fight....and repeat saveload until you get an S-Class.

I heard stories about people had to play up to 50 times the same fight in order to get an S-Class.

I would really like an S-Class so i can finally build my freighter base. But i really don´t think it is worth grinding 7-8 hours straight to get one. I really don´t know why HelloGames chose this path for freighters....why can i just not buy it for like....double the money if i would have found one? Like the exosuits...you can find drop pods and that is so much cheaper then upgrading at space stations.

So for you who have an S-Class freighter....was it worth it?

Also a question to you who has got one. Can i play for 3 straight hours...warp around and then when i find a fight save and come back to the game later and replay the fight over and over again until i get one? Or is this a "one shot deal"....play for 3 straight hours....then play for additional hours in order to find one?

UPDATE:
After writing this post. I jumped in to the game and just warped to a location i have been before (rich Kovax system)...and there was a fight! So no..."playing for 3 hours". The ship is a black Venitor...DSE-7...haven´t got the correct slots...so i will grind this for a bit and see what will happen.

UPDATE 2:
I tried 9 times. And could still not get an S-class. But fortunally i know that i don´t need to play for 3 hours straight and a jump a whole lot of systems to get a chance at a huge freighter (i did that before...along time ago).

Don´t know if the freighter in this mission is a medium or large...or if that changes...but here are the results (9 times save Scumming):
B-31, B-31, B-30, A-33, C-25, B-28, A-32, A-33, C-26.

You have the money gathered to buy? It has taken me ages just to gather up 31 million. I was on a c class freighter with 30 slots and after a batlle (aka at a massive discount) it cost roughly 110 million and obviously I could not afford it. So I dread to think how much an S class freighter would cost.

IMO the most important aspect of a freighter is the number of slots. I've done the reload thing in the past, but usually settled for an A-Class 34 slot, which are much more common.

I think HG could fix the problem by making the penalty less when you trade in a freighter. It used to be that you would lose half of your materials (and your build time), which was bad enough. Now it's 100% which is much worse. I think they should give you 100% of your materials back and then you would just have to rebuild, which seems like a reasonable compromise.

Nope. As far as your freighter goes the slot count is all that really matters.

What are you doing to make money? There are several ways to make units pretty quick (farming, crafting expensive items, trading, frigate expeditions, scanning flora/fauna, etc). Just pick one and work your way toward it. Don't waste your time trying to mine your way to riches.

I would think it's not worth it. Getting a max slot carrier, sure, keep swapping freighters till you get one, but to grind for an S... i wouldn't bother.

I'd suggest just focusing on storage. And hope while you're looking, you stumble upon an S.

S-class only brings a warp drive bonus, so how important do you find it. Me personally I like having things max out so I can't forget about needing to improve them later.

Only things that really matters for Freighters is slot count and design/colour - the S class hyperdrive bonus is of little value as there are currently no upgrades to the freighter hyperdrives so their range is very low - 139 LY, easily surpassed in any other ship. So no - S class Freighter is just a shiny badge at moment - that may change if they add the upgrades back in.

At some point HG is going to do something about Freighter classes, and that S class will count for something significant.
...
but most people aren't holding their breath for it.

now you cant glyph hop to a ship site... as both basebuild and gal map are offline while in that area......... so s ship hunting just became the mega grind of all time.......happy games..... kmbfa....devs without a clue how to deploy game rules should be rounded up... ands eliminated from the gene pool

My way currently is scanning flora and fauna. I upgraded my multitool with some s class scanner upgrades and now I get roughly 60k to 70k for small animals, 300k for large animals and about 75k per tree, shrub etc etc. Crafting is a sodding nightmare (slots required, gathering resources) and requires far too much patience that I just dont have. With perseverance I will make up the money. Just right now with the inventory bug I aint playing until that has been fixed.

Have 350 millions...trading is the name of this game :-)

I haven't read all the replies here so I'm just going to give you my opinion on the original post.

If you trade or explore at all you will jump 5 systems anyway. When you do you can kill the pirates and get offered the ship. Don't like it don't take it. If you do like it you can summon your freighter, clean it out and then pilot your ship back and accept theirs. I have the really really large feighter model. It's not class S, or A, or even B; it's C. Regardless it still has 26 slots compared to the 16 my old one had and it only cost me 30 million.

I can go to a system summon my freighter explore the system, play the game and slowly fill my freighters cargo hold with trading commodities. When it's more or less full. I jump to another system, sell it all, and begin the whole process over.

Will I upgrade again? If I can find a higher class version of the one I got sure. I'm in no rush though. If I were you I wouldn't bother famring an S class unless you haven't gotten a freighter yet so it would be free. Otherwise just play the game and stuff will come eventually. For me farming an S class freighter is too time consuming and unfun for me to pursue seriously. I'm fine with my C class for now.

I got stupid lucky , wasnt really trying to farm anything just endlessly jumping systems and putzing around and like the saying goes , Even a blind squirrel gets a nut now and then
