"Base Terrain Edits: X"
It's nice to see the improvements that are being made with the terrain regeneration issue, but while building my base today suddenly placing new blocks stopped modifying the terrain they intersect. I've asked about this in the past; I realize it's becoming a known issue. But today was the first time I noticed the "Base Terrain Edits: X" note on the right of the screen when building.

So, am I right to say this is a game function, not a bug? There seems to be a limit on how much terrain you can modify in a base. See here, on the right:

I ran into this issue last night when working on my farming bases - I wish they gave a way to roll back terrain edits to resolve it - like an option with the base computer. But you can "fix" it in your save game file - in that you can delete existing terrain edits to free up space. There's a reddit post for how to nuke all of it with the save game JSON editor - that's the easy way. But you can also figure out what base each batch of terrain edits are for. In my case, I found the last two bases I had just started and removed their 28,000 entries from the tables and I was back up and running. Those edits were at the end of the lists so they were easy to remove and it worked. If you've scattered them about or want to remove less recent changes then it will be more difficult. Obviously you better back up your data before you try and play mad scientist too.

Anyway, its also pretty lame that HG took away available base locations - by taking that out, they force everyone to modify the terrain now when placing structures and hit the limit.

There are still available base locations on nice flat areas. I think you can scan for them with the signal booster and one of those data chip things. I've seen them, though. They have a base computer waiting in the middle just like there used to be an unclaimed round room.

Actually, I may be wrong about being able to scan for them... I know i've seen a couple lone base computers in the middle of a field before though. Sorry for the possible misinformation.

Yes, my current base was just recently a base computer alone on a wide flat meadow.

The problem is not that you have too much it's that you have done too little. Only when you reach over the limit does it change to Base Is Uploadable. I guess that it's to stop their servers being filled with crappy forgotten halfhearted attempts.
I'm not sure I understand what you're saying. My base has already been uploaded, but the issue is I can't expand it without terrain filling the rooms.

They've bumped the base limit size up quite a bit, but terrain editing in your base radius is part of your base. If you want it to be permanent, it needs to take up save space, which is why outside of your base radius terrain regenerates after a bit. Its on a timer, like your plants. If you want to burrow into the ground, it takes save space to maintain that alteration. My suggestion: if you want to build underground, find a huge cavern and build in, and then if you need to make a few alterations to make things fit, it won't add too much to your save limits.
I'm pretty sure my edits are well within my base limits. The issue is there seems to be a limit to the number of terrain edits, within or without the base area. Even if I try editing terrain right next to my base computer now, it won't work. The "Base Terrain Edits" says no when placing base pieces, and using the terrain manipulator doesn't save after a reload.

I can't say for sure on this, but IIRC on another thread it was mentioned that terrain editing is saved for the whole galaxy in the save file. So if that is correct then a little here, a little there starts to add up.

HG did do somthing, they renamed a bug to a game function because they could'nt be hosed fixing it.
I'm afraid you might be right. Now, I love this game, and I've had great fun with it for a few weeks, but to be honest I find myself less enjoying it then I did a week ago. I'm not sure whether all these minor changes are intended as 'progress' towards the official release version (because, it's still in Alpha, am I right?) but I don't like that I had figured out how to do something, and then to discover that after patch so-and-so it stopped working that way.

I inclined to conclude that the dev team do not at all have a clear vision of what they want with this game.

Besides, I am also under the impression that I am noticing more performance issues while building larger bases (but maybe this is merely a matter of me building larger and larger).

Since last patch terrain is respawning wildly everywhere.

- Placing buildings no longer clears the terrain beneath it.
- Formerly cleared terrain now respawns about two days later.
- It doesn't matter if you visit the places. Today, we visited one base and everything was OK. We visited again two hours later and our base was full of dirt.
- Uploading your base has nothing to do with this problem.

They broke something last patch. Everything was fine right back to NEXT update in July.

For now, we only build a base on columns. Best not to touch the ground. But this issue is really annoying. I think we may have lost our underground base because of that. Why don't they just let us use the Terrain Manipulator inside the base??
