he's a good author, regardless of how many people use his things, but however cool it would be to see lovecraftian monsters in NMS, I believe it would not fit the theme of the game, as it is incredibly difficult to achieve that Lovecraft Feel in a game. It isn't impossible, and the sense of isolation already exists in NMS, so it could work
However, I do really want space whales, like please. Nothing is cooler than a massive pod of giant whales in the middle of space
Classic space Sci-fi is, if I recall right, set in a more hopeful setting, where there is exciting and strange worlds one can explore and adventure in. The huge expanse of space is awe inspiring and possibly humbling; with dangers, but ones that can be overcome with bravery and skill.
Lovrcraftian myhos and horror is about how uncaring and extremely dangerous the vast voids are to both to the mind and body of humans, with no way to resist or protect oneself from it. Beings of unimaginable power exist in the cold and hostile emptiness of space, and spaces between space, any of which can drive a man insane if they gain some understanding of it.
There are some horrors in NMS, and HG has done their own spin on it, but is nowhere near as harsh and grim as Lovecraftian horror. That's not to say that the cosmic horror mythos is bad, but it just isn't what NMS is based on.
I'm still looking for that real World of Glass that was referenced in the logs found in those flesh covered abandoned buildings, other than the short peek you get in the Artemis quest, which sounds pretty close to being Lovecraftian, but done in a totally different way.
Having something like that in the world, but be something you'd have to hunt for, is probably the best way to go about it.
Ursula K Le Guin...
Edit: Not horror, but still my fave.
