Build a base around a number of vents, swim, and collect.
This isn't really better, and is in fact probably worse, but at least it's...different? And not confined to water planets? You can get them from glowing crystals that you get by harvesting floating crystals or those buried mineral crystal things that you can dig up. But, it's one of...10? 12? possible outcomes when you "open" those.
Make an underwater base with an easy and quick access to each of the vents.
Collect all crystal, save, reload, all crystal have regrown, go harvest the vents again.
Rince and repeat.
But there wasn't many options for obtaining. I can't remember if it was possible to purchase them for ships that fly into space stations...
