Finding predators?
How do I find them? Every planet I come across it takes forever to find animals at all and when I do its never a predator. I see the mission so I assume there aggresive animals somewhere, but after 220 hours of game time I haven't seen a single one.

Help?

As soon as you start shooting it, it will probably attack you.

They aren't too common but if you look around a bit you'll find them. I don't think there is a special way to find them or anything, just look for the bigger creature that's harrassing the smaller ones. The ones I've seen are usually these miniature trex looking creatures or wolf like.

The monstrosities at those particular facilities MIGHT count as predators. Not 100% though.
The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

Last time I checked they do.

Going to have to give the facilities a try. I'm not sure if its a weak graphics card issue but it takes awhile for any critters to load in at all. How are the creatures spawned? Maybe I'm just in the wrong places.

^ Also it'll be described as a "hunter" or something similar to that under it's description.

Creatures seem to spawn randomly when you are just exploring on foot.

Try feeding creatures too, that usually attracts more and may attract a predator .. just a theory.

unless it was a bug and got fixed since last week, every animal counts as a "predator" for the kill X predators mission....

literally every animal you see progress your mission when you kill it, does not matter wether it looks like a deer or like a panther thing... even the obvious herbies counted for me... though havent done one of the predator missions in a few days, so dunno if that was fixed...

Suprised you have not come across any in 220 hours of gameplay, any planet that has animals has generaly got at least one predator.

I got attacked by 4 cute looking Teddybear Ewok things with Tortoiseshell backs when i started shooting them for a Kill task.

I found a planet with a few of them so I build a base there. You can scan them and see terms like "alpha" diet "raw meat" "small animals" etc. or as was said just wait till one attacks another. Monstrosities do not count as predators unfortunately (I tried). Good luck with your hunting.

Edit: spelling

I am too. You'd think any planet that has a food chain would have them or... im just incredibly lucky/unlucky.

I think it has, or at least it isn't working for me. Just tested it.

That's a good idea. Will definitely have to set up camp when I find some.

Had a quest asking for 12 predators last week, After an hour of looking I realized just killing any animal counted towards completion of the quest. Try that =)

I think thats a good part of the reason I thought I didnt have any. I read somewhere that was the indicator and I thought that was current information.

Thank you everyone that replied for the help! You all rock.

As of the latest build of NMS, the monstrosities do NOT count as predators. There are still predators that will attack you on sight, but they are few and far between. I have had the same issue of accepting the mission and being unable to find predators, so on my last predator mission I set up a base with "attack you on sight" predators that are plentiful :) Named the planet "Predators" and the base "Predators Here!". The is a pod to climb in if needed and a teleport so that you can return to your last system if you wish. I will post again when I log in and report which system it is located in.

Replying to a 4 year old thread about information that at the time was accurate but it completely outdated with what we have right now. It seems rather pointless to make any attempt at a correction.

Was in no way an attempt at correction, simply providing information for those searching for it. That's how I came across this post in the first place. *shrug* FWIW... Sredno-Ewpo system.

I am confirming what Del-Dredd has written.

I got through all the steps in all five parts of this Expedition EXCEPT for the 'make a pet of an aggressive monster' - I could simply not find one anywhere.

I was looking for:
a) An animal that, when scanned, showed the 'aggro/predator' scan icon (it is red and not the usual green).
b) An animal what would automatically hunt/attack me when I got close.

I never found one.

And I never bothered to read the info the scan returned about the animal, because I was looking for the special scan icon and/or animal behavior!!!

After reading what Del-Dredd said, I went back into the game and
a) Looked through all the planets I had already visited - especially those with a goodly number of already-scanned animals.
b) Ignoring swimmers and flyers, I checked the description of each animal, looking for 'keywords' - like meat-eater, hunter, carnivorous, etc. Quite frankly, the carnivores really did stand out from the herbivores.
c) I found what looked like a very good candidate.

I then 'ported back to that planet, hunted down the specific animal, and made it my companion.

SUCCESS: It was a predator and it satisfied the Expedition step.

Now: I do not know if this is an Expedition-specific behavior or not, because it is definitely not what I remember predator/aggressive animals doing.

Maybe I will load up one of my recent non-Expedition saves and see if this is now the 'new normal'.

Also: Be sure to check your 'Difficulty' tab - there is an entry that can turn off predators entirely.

So: Thanks, Del-Dredd, even if I am a few years late with the congrats.
