Take a picture of a Portal?

I've got four of these missions now.

What does it mean when it says portal?
I've taken pictures of all the things I think are portals and nothing works.

Portals are the large alien monolith looking structures with the Pop up Pedestal with Glyphs engraved around the pedestal's perimeter.

The confusion stems from the misuse of the word PORTAL when describing the "Base Terminus" teleporter. Those are not Portals.

You find a planet's Portal using a variety of techniques that can be found on various NMS Wikis and using Google.

A portal are the monuments that give an option to dial in a location. They are usually bigger with a path leading up to them.

And they require a potload of different elements, which I usually don't have with me.

And you need to be in photo mode and use left mouse button, not f12

If you're not sure how to find them, you can go to a monolith and it will ask you for an item of the race running the system. A gek relic, vykeen dagger, or korvac casing. Giving the monolith this will mark the location of a portal.
You'll have to fly there and charge the dialing device but the materials needed for that are pretty common and usually available near the portal.
For your mission you might need an active portal. You can activate them with at least 1 glyph by just using the same one for all slots in the address.

I'd recommend also putting down a beacon so you can find the portal later if you want to explore with it.

When you go through you'll end up on another planet and the portal should stay open till you go back through. You won't be able to use station teleports while the portal is active but you can place a base computer on the other side, return through the portal, then use a station teleport to get back to your base computer. Make sure you claim the site with your base computer.

Just finished mine last night. The portal does Not have to be activated to successfuly take the picture.
If you want to explore it, then you will need at least one glyph and the required basic materials to activate it. i.e sodium, condensed carbon, ect.

I've been through them a few times.
I'm in my second Galaxy now [the Nice one].

Just didn't know which picture I needed to take.

No matter what I do no photo registers. What am I doing wrong? Photo mode ...check

Well, if this is a mission for the current Community Event then you absolutely know where a Portal is. It's that big slab thing with the undulating electric blue circle that you passed through to get to the event planet. So, that Portal which you arrived through? Just use photo mode and take a picture of it. Bada bing bada boom!

Sommetimes Photo mode is very finicky. I know i had 3 quests for taking a pic of a Monolith and it wouldnt register it until the 6th or 7th pic when I moved the camera just right.

I'm doing it for the Community event, and it is very specific to get the photo correct.

I eventually found, you need to be at the front facing the portal, with the Pop up Pedestal thingie 'open' and in the picture. Then it worked. You didnt need to get all the items for it.
