There is a lot of information out there, but it seems the best advice is to just send all the kind required for a mission type to get the best haul. Early on, that is usually not possible but by the time you get all S class frigates it is.
The downside is that usually by the time you get them all S class you no longer really need credits or much of anything anymore. If you find the mini game enjoyable is the main criteria.
That should help you get started. Be advised that the "Support" stat he lists only shows up on the save editors, it's otherwise hidden. A maxxed stat 0-mission C-rank supply frigate will have a 5 in that stat, plus its specialist +15 for a total of 20. In goatfungus's save editor, this is reflected in "Expedition Fuel Cost". It sounds like a 20 here would be bad, but that stat is actually what the supply frigate is saving you every mission you send it on.
He's got a table at the very far right tab which you may have to copy to your own Google Drive to edit. That'll be where you want to do all your frigate calculations to see where you should be. Very doable, just math.
For funsies, the Max C rank on each frigate at 0 missions complete is:
Combat: 5/2/4/2 with a hidden 0 in support.
Exploration: 2/5/2/4 with that 0 hidden.
Trade: 1/2/4/5 and again 0.
Industrial: 3/1/5/3 with the final hidden 0.
Supply: 4/4/4/4 with a hidden 5.
