You can spawn any of your ships, hop in and it will be the active ship, this will be ship used in the trade. You can't do it in space stations though, only in planet outposts.
Ug, super dumb that there's nothing at all to indicate this is the case either before or after you reach the limit, or on the trade screens. For all the improvements, so much of this game is still terrible, especially UI/quality of life stuff.
When you summon your ship it tells you how many you have cause you can choose the ship lol.
It's not such a terrible problem. You just need to understand the mechanics of the game, it's all there.
EDIT, you don't need to hop in the ship, as soon as you summon it, it will become your active ship. This was changed in one of the last patches.
How does any of this help the problem I was having? Firstly, you can't summon a ship on the space station, so that does nothing for my original issue. Second, I've summoned a ship like 3 times when I've been playing because I never have a reason to. Why would I? And finally, how is it good design to bury a fairly important piece of information several menus deep in an unrelated area? It's just one more in a series of terrible UI decisions.
Information in this game is not surfaced in any sort of logical or useful way. Want to check what system you left your freighter in so you can teleport to it after you've been warping around trading and exploring? Well, get back in your ship, fly out of the station, open the map, find your freighter, land back in the station, and then you can use the teleporter. What to see how much inventory space you have left when buying something from a trade terminal? OK, exit out of the terminal, open your inventory, manually count all of the slots, close your inventory, and go back in the terminal. Want to see if you have some particular material in the inventory of one of your other ships? Sure, just fly back to your freighter, get out of your ship, and, one by one, get into your other ships and open your inventory to check those out.
I could go on and on. The UI is complete garbage in terms of functionality. It looks cool, but it is trash, and nothing you can say will ever convince me otherwise.
When you want to trade ships with some flexibility you go to planet outposts, period. This way you can summon exactly the ship you don't want.
If an interesting ship lands in an space station you know the pool of the ships in the system, so you go to a trade outpost and sooner or later you will get the same kind of ship. There is an important thing called planning, you know the type of ships in every system: explorers for korvax, haulers for geks and fighters for Vyken.
You can know how many ships you have with your tools in the fast tab, stop complaining about a non issue.
My God, if you play other space games like Elite Dangerous you would cry, everything is way harder.
If you will point out a single thing I exaggerated, I will happily change my opinion. Until then, I will not act like this game is perfect (or has anywhere near a good UI system) just because overall I like it.
I first noticed it when I was trying to repair an abandoned ship. I was able to claim the ship and move back and forth between that ship and my current one as my main, and I was going back and forth that way to repair the abandoned ship. Then, at the point where I returned with the last of necessary materials, it wouldn't let me switch between mains anymore, and required that I abandon my current ship to claim the abandoned one anymore. Now when I see traders that I can make offers to for a ship, it only offers me the option to exchange. I believe I own two ships total.
I saw other threads that suggested that this is a bug that can be worked around by emptying my current ship of items before trying to add to my fleet, but that solution isn't working for me.
You don't need to start a new thread and then necro on old one on the same topic.
Even if we wouldn't be able to have all 3 on the same system (only 6 ships at a time) you could warp out to your next freighter and pick one of those, bring it back and play with them like that It wouldn't screw up the game too much
