Well that's great and all, but it's a huge fail on storytelling IMO. You don't set up a story about a broken universe and cycles repeating pointlessly only to have the resolution be that you can either just let it happen again or that you just don't anything about it and what you thought was a countdown to the end doesn't actually matter at all because there's really no rush. That's hugely unsatisfying.
I take it that there isn't actually a way to fix ATLAS or really resolve the story then? They just go so far with writing it and then gave up at the end? Or is Hello Games really trying to make some weird nihilistic point about how nothing you do actually matters?
From a Lore perspective, 16 minutes to Atlas is an unknown (yet large) amount of time to the inhabitance of the universes.
FWIW, If you install the Remembrance in your exosuit, you can now interact with some new things behind the AtlasPass V2 doors. They tell a little more of the story.
Yes, the lore has clearly evolved over time, and I did really enjoy the NEXT storyline. It's just a shame that they didn't resolve anything in the end. And I don't really see any point in resetting the universe and starting over in another galaxy if all that's going to do is make me repeat everything I've done without further developments. If the story continues in other galaxies then there'd be a point at least.
It does not reset all your quests, actually. It does damage some of your equipment, and you can no longer access your old bases, but you do have ways to get your storage back and some (about half) of your base building resources back.
Your ship and freighter remain yours though.
The lore of NMS is the prelude to YOUR story.
It is not something you follow, but what you lead.
It is a story of what YOU do in that 16 (atlas) min.
So what will it be? Would it be a story of an traveler who traversed all the galaxies? Or maybe it will be a name carved into magnificent monuments? You can be a part of the group who build the first city in NMS.

However, to the OP: Part of the point of NMS is to create your OWN narrative. Think of HelloGames as the DM, and they've created this worldspace for you. Now you get to choose what to do with it. Some people actually are writing stories about encounters their character has. Some are writing fan-fiction.
If you're looking for story-telling with a definite ending, NMS isn't the game for you.
No, I got your point - I just find that incredibly unsatisfying. What attracted me to NMS was the story (even at the start, when there barely was one), not the sandbox elements. I'm not really interested in a minecraft clone with prettier graphics, I was interested in what was going on with ATLAS and everything else - and in NEXT that was pretty interesting and engaging and I got invested in it. But they took that story 95% of the way there and then just seemed to give up at the end and not bother to resolve anything. They could have still put in a proper resolution to the story and THEN said "and now you're done and it's time for you to make your own story" and I would have been fine with that... but they didn't.
And if they wanted it to just be a place to 'tell your own story' (i.e. to play it until you get bored, like Minecraft or any other survival game) then why did they make the effort to put all that lore in there to start with? What's the point if it doesn't resolve to anything? I think it's pretty disingenuous of them to string players along and get them playing the storyline for 30-40 hours only to leave it hanging without resolution at the end.
Maybe they're going to add a proper ending to the story later but it seems odd that they added all the other parts of the storyline and then just didn't bother to finish it in NEXT.
You refused to reset the universe, so you have not completed the story line yet.
The mystery is solved. You're a copy of the mind of ATLAS's creator. Atlas wanted you as part of the simulation, because ATLAS knew when it would die, and was afraid to be alone. ATLAS is dying, and you're there to comfort it in its last moments. (The last moment, arguably, is when you stop playing.)
It's a story about loneliness and finding joy in the infinite possibilities of life when you've accepted the inevitability of death.
You can read about the Walking Titan ARG[wiki.gamedetectives.net], but it doesn't really add much.

So basically it's utterly nihilistic? The universe is dying (or just doomed to repeat itself in a futile attempt to stop the death process), there's nothing you can do about it and nothing you do is going to matter, so just enjoy what time you have left? That's what it seems to want me to take away from this.
If that's what it is then fair enough I guess, but it's really unsatisfying. Especially when that "death" isn't really inevitable because it's never going to happen since the game just lets you carry on forever.
