After the very early portion of the game, this is a very minor inconvenience.
Save Editor has a built in UI to add upgrades to any tool or ship. I didn't like that part though.
I really only use it to modify inventory slots.
It's better to just buy them.
I know what you mean though, you find that new Multitool and you start thinking about all the upgrades you'll have to find and buy because it's totally random and you might not see this MT again, etc.
They love this. They do it to you on purpose.
It's actually not bad though as you get to try different configurations and weapons.
I just try to buy and save a few S Mining and S Scanner modules and whatever else I have and store em so if I do find that Multitool I'll already have most of the upgrades ready to go.
Which is even more reason I have problems with the storage in this game...
Or you could just keep track of which stations carry your favorite S ranked upgrades, and then teleport there and buy 'em again as needed in like, 2 minutes. Since those lists are fixed, and restock every time you use the teleporter to go out of the system and back.
Yeah, that's why I keep a notepad where I write down a list of the systems where I found each S ranked upgrade that I instaled. If you do that it's really not that much of a hassle to buy the stuff again.
I guess it's easier for old people like myself, that were used to the days when part of enjoying a game was making your own hand drawn maps and filling in your pen-and-paper notebook with various bits and bobs that you discovered. :P
Residual Goop -> Viscous Fluid -> Living Slime -> Runaway Mould -> Nanites.
Jn stands for 'junk', and not all junk turns to nanites. Rusted metal is a Junk item that turns into Ferrite Dust for example.
Each step of refining takes 6 minutes for each stack of 250, except the last, Runaway Mould -> Nanites takes about 1 minute.

nice is that you can sort them in the slots too
