Does repairing a ship increase it's trade value?
Thinking about ditching some old ships and I wondered if it would be worth it to repair them first.

Absolutely. Ive done this a couple times.

Price of a ship is based off of the number of (good) slots available in the inventory and then applied with a small multiplier based on the class of the inventory.. So fixing damaged slots can definitely increase the value of your ship..

However, you only get 70% return for your ship, and most damaged slots have incrementing repair costs.. So the payoff is probably going to be negligible if you're only planning to fix the slot to sell it. You're likely to pay just as much (if not slightly more) than 70% of the difference between the damaged and the repaired values..

Forgot to ask. Are these ships some that you discovered, but never finished repairing? If so, then the answer is still yes.

ive never had any luck repairing ships and getting "more" out of them i pick them up because I can trade them for fighters. The only things i repair are launch thrusters, pulse engine and shields, I leave them where I find them and my freighter picks them up when I restart my game. I just traded a small hauler for an A29+5 fighter with 49percent dam increase -- good deal, only 3 million units.

The damaged slots do not have incrementing costs anymore (this was pre-NEXT), this makes it even more valuable to repair damaged ships. Generally there are 5-6 types of icons that have the same repair materials. Start with those which are cheapest. And no need to repair the tech slots if you intend to trade-in the ship.

I have repaired a 30+ hawler and spent in total only about 2.6M by buying the necessary materials. The gain for the trade-in value was well over 20M :)

Small ships may not be worth repairing. Just calculate your total repair cost and compare it with the future gain in trade-in value.

I use this formula:

Current value = 2/3 New Price x (slots intact : total slots)

Your 'Current value' is the trade-in discount you get when exchanging ships.
The 'New Price' is shown when you scan your ship with F.
To see your Current Value you must or use this formula or go in a 'Compare' screen with NPC ships. You will undoubtly see this value increase when you repair the ship. if you repair all slots it will reach 2/3 of the New Price plus or minus a small price modificator taking the nr. of tech slots and ship stats in account, that's why the formula above is only about 90% correct.

The game drops an A:48+8 Hauler on the second distress call (wish I got that on my Permadeath run). Value says 112,000,000, the trade in value without any repairs is 29,400,000.

I've found a lot of conflicting information about ship trade values. From fixed slots not really counting due to a bug to a max 40% value however you repair it. I haven't played NMS before the NEXT update, so don't have much knowledge of the old systems.

I do remember repairing a ship in Permadeath (the mechanics should be the same?), but didn't pay attention to the value after. I'll have to see with Hauler repairs if anything changes, at least for the current update. And try out the formula japp_02 mentioned.

I got an A48/8 Hauler and repaired all the slots. At first the sell value didn't change and the slots displayed when you're doing a trade still showed the old number. BUT each time I loaded the game and I check the sell price the price would go up and the slots changed. It now says 48 slots and trade in is at 78,500,000 (70%). The change happened before the patch fix, but I think it works now without the gradual increase back to 48.
