Preferably you'd want several medium or large refineries on hand for that method.
TBH my slightly lazy way of collecting basic resources is fit a fully upgraded Positron Ejector (6xS class upgrade mods) to a freighter and fly as low and slow as possible shooting up the terrain. I can get several thousand carbon and ferrite dust a minute that way shooting rocks and trees on the right planet. Just do not fly INTO the terrain it will stuff your shields in no time flat.
This issue I had with the shotgun approach was that it didn't mine as fast as I heard people say it mined. I was under the impression that it would be like some sort of vacuum cleaner, sucking up all the material in a few shots. I had a heck of a time clearing this one patch of stuff, taking 5-6 passes to fully destroy what was there so to get the bulk of the materials. My basic Photon Cannon had a better time taking out the larger stuff, but only while shooting the ground around it. It did net me a lot of basic level carbon, but not as fast as I would have hoped; which I then turned into Carbon Crystal in my refineries for later!
