Thinking of getting this. How much of a survival game is it?
I just never got around to getting NMS (other games just came up). I'm thinking of getting it when this new expansion comes out.

The thing I want to ask, is how much of a survival game is it? I love games like Don't Starve and the Long Dark, any survival game really.

Do you have to worry about growing food, eating, drinking, sleeping etc? Like, is it a constant struggle to survive? Because that's what I'm looking for.

If that isn't something that's in the game, could I at least ropeplay it a bit? Like, can you even eat food? Can you even sleep? Can you even grow food?

Oh, and is temperature a thing?

Yes there are survival tactics in this game wich is i think the core of this game to survive. U have temperatures, radiation, heat, cold, toxins etc to struggle with during the search for your goal. Ofcourse there are upgrades for your spacebackpack, spaceship, offroads and the buidling blocks for your base to build and all what come with it. You have to nurture yourself by indeed growing stuff, by hiring someone in a spacestation who help u with this. You can hire a tech guy and some others to help u out with it during your quest.

I think it's very good all and all, graphics are good, gameplay is good and story is good. I just got this game during the sale I was waiting for and so far I am not dissapointed.
I'm playing on normal mode for now later i will olso do the other harder modes.

So yes it is a survival-adveture quest for sure and a good one too :steamhappy:

It's the inverse of the Long Dark.

Starts pretty hard with you dying all the time, ends with survival being a minor aspect.

No eating, drinking or sleeping. Wouldn't make much sense from the story point. You can play on permadeath mode though if this is your thing.

You can grow food plants, but it's more for crafting and trading.

I play on survival. It's the second hardest mode. With that said the game is for casuals. I consider myself more on the hardcore gamer side but that doesnt stop me from enjoying NMS. Its my favorite game of all time.

As for your other questions you can build a farm but the farm is for monetary gain. There is no sleeping or any normal human cycle.

You simply walk around collecting the items, blueprints, materials etc to further your journey.

If you're looking for a challenge then the only option would be permideath. You get one life and at any time you die you start over.

In terms of gameplay its quite similar to other survival games. Just different mechanics and purpose to the game.

It gets easier as you play. The start can be difficult, but as you become more competent threats are less and the game becomes much more exploration focused. To survive you have to keep your life support charged and hazard protection charged, and avoid or defend from threats, either animal, robot, or environmental. But you don't cook meat of killed animals or fish. You can have crops, but not for food. It's unclear in the game, but it's possible you are not a biological being. You don't sleep. Temperature is a very real thing in the game and storms can kill quickly, depending on the planet.

It isnt a survival game. The game's difficulty is static, so its very hard at the beginning when you have little, and very easy after just a short time of learning and getting stuff. The survival / permadeath modes are tougher, but not much (again, after a bit of time, it goest from tough to trivial). The survival games you think of get harder enemy or tougher areas as you leave the newe player zone etc .... there is no new player zone here. There are tougher areas than where you started, but there are also much easier areas. You start in a low-average difficulty place.

Do you mean survival game as in actually about surving? Or do you mean survival games as in the video game genre. Seeing you mention TLD makes me think you want the former. NMS is the ladder.

It’s a survival game for the first hour or two but once you get going there isn’t much risk of dying and becomes more an exploration-building game.

Okay.. this is not kind of that survival game, so there is no hunger, thirst, sanity, or rest meter here. Therefore, no food, no drink, no clothes, and no rest are required.

Temperature is a thing, but in current version of the game.. once in you are in the planet, it's either too hot, too cold, too toxic, or too irradiated. It's pretty much the same, the only differences is the protection type you have to equip in your suit.

Yeah, reading all this makes me think NMS probably isn't what I'm looking for.

Might pick it up on a sale sometime and give it a go then.

Wow! Somebody considering buying the game and not just asking "Is this game worth the price?"!

I would agree with most of the other posters that it's not really the type of survival game that you're looking for. I think of it more like Minecraft in that respect, where, once you're kind of setup, survival is not that hard and it's more of a casual exploration/treasure hunt.

Well, the price does surprise me a bit. Most games that have been out for as long as NMS usually have some sort of permanet price drop. If they can afford to not drop, though, then good for them in the end.

When it's a bit cheaper I'll jump on it most likely. Was really hoping I'd get some sort of Long Dark-esque sci fi survival fix though lol. Ah well.

It is that kind of survival game. The meters just have different names. Life support, Hazard Protection etc.

I would say than this is nothing for you.
