The star located closest to the center of the view will be marked with a highlight - press LMB to select that system, press RMB to de-select.
Stars that are close enough to your current location can be warped to by holding LMB while selected. Your ability to warp depends on if the Hyperdrive has sufficient fuel, as well as any upgrades or color-drives you have installed.
If you have the Economy Scanner and/or Combat Scanner installed, you can press DOWN ARROW to change the star color display. By default, stars are colored by their star class, but can also show economy type or combat threat level.
LEFT ARROW selects a target on the map to guide you to. You can choose between targets - Galactic Center, nearest Atlas Station, nearest Black Hole, or the target system for the currently selected quest (if there is a target)
Edited to correct some things, I got them backward a bit.
@Mystra4 - I appreciate your time and sharing your info, it helped a lot.
I cannot believe it, but somehow this time I was able to have a meaningful and coherent interaction with the map!
I went to a planet I had never been to. And in the process I even discovered the renown Anomaly!
I must say, I did not particularly enjoy the pirate battles. I felt at a total disadvantage. It was so hard to just aim at them, let alone shoot them up. I would be impressed If I got a shot on them twice. Fortunately I went through and made it to the Anomaly alive.
I was pretty amazed when I found out that WASD takes you through the entire galaxy on the map - it's the actual universe, not a depiction of sorts. Blew my mind. ^^ You can click on any system you like, no matter where it is, and then chart a course towards it (I just wish my ship could warp further than only three or four systems).
Planets aren't selected on the map - instead you find them listed on the DISCOVERY tab in the menu.
The radar on your ship will show the planets (circles) and the station (diamond) along with nearby ships (red/green dots). Radar is useful for finding planets that like to hide behind other planets.
