Once in the build menu if you press 'C' on the keyboard you should go into the build camera view and you can move your viewpoint into any position you like. This is similar to the screenshot camera mode. This helps position your viewpoint into a location easy to see what your are working on.
In combination with the above you can be very precise in lining up objects. There are limits to how close some objects will sit next to each other. Objects can also be pinned to wires to some extent.
A console type controller for PC may give you the flexibility and level of control that might be lacking with keyboard and mouse. The button set ups sort of work best because of the arrangement of the ergonomic layout. Though you can customise the keys on any keyboard to how you want. I use a combination of mouse, keyboard and controller with some customisation for my preference.

In the meantime, I've found a mod that will let me do all these things in Blender, so meh. Just annoyed that I have to use 3rd party software to do what I want.
