For people who love base building: How good is it?
I'm thinking of getting No Man's Sky because I am hugely into building bases as a gameplay component (only reason I have so many hours in Just Survive, Rust, Ark, The Forest, Fallout 4, Subnautica, so forth), and I wanted to get a general consensus as to whether or not you like the base building system, what its pros and cons are, etc. I'm a little put out by the price tag, but if the base building is awesome I might have to cave in. Thanks in advance for any and all opinions.

First off, wait for a sale. They've been putting it on sale whenever a new patch drops and there's one on the way, but they are updating the game regularly so the $60 price tag may be more reasonable than it appears in the long run.

The base building is good. There's alot to work with and seemingly more to come. There is a complexity restriction, but this can be turned off on PC. However your sharing will still be limited with what others will see.

Base building is very similar to Subnautica with regards to pieces. Albeit you might have actually more placeables in NMS by now. With a simple number change in the appropiate file you can make a mega base :)
Static npcs are abit off putting, but they served what they had so its ok.
I am not to far into base building as it doesnt fit for my current playstyle.
But you can read up alot and watch LP^s i am sure if you are interested.

I play a lot of Empyrion, and this game is not as good as that when it comes to building bases. . NMS has interesting pieces to work with since it is a space game, but I would call the building kinda average.

I cannot recommend the game for this aspect alone. But then again I don't recommend it at all.
Basebuilding in NMS sums NMS up grnerally. No depth, very little fun, paint by numbers simplistic pap.

I agree with Fallout 4 being merely okay'ish. I think, for as much as people complain about Just Survive, the base building has come such a long way, at this point it is my absolute favorite system. It employs the 'pieces' process a la Rust and Ark (vs prefab buildings), but is less forgiving with its foundation system, and you really feel like your earning the materials though gathering and hunting, and the look of the wood and metal is very rustic and appealing, etc.

I feared that the NMS basebuilding was going to be like Subnautica, but then I started seeing screenshots of people who are free forming, creating buildings that look like train depots or helicopters or a giant robots, etc. So I was like "okay... hold on a second... I see some creative options here..." So I'm a bit confused by your assessment that there are only prefab buildings with no variation.

There are building components that are put together in creative ways in NMS. There may be a wall that can be freely placed.
edit: the basebuilding is like subnautica. But there are a few other pieces to work with for more freedom in NMS.

Depth is only there for those that look for it. Base Building is no exception. Never listen to gamers, they either greatly oversell or undersell a game. Watch a video of someone building a base and you will get an actual idea of what pieces are in the game. No one here is going to help you.

Hi Luxury Taco,

I will grant to Captain that base building in NMS can seem at first to offer little depth. In fact there's a lot you can do.

Here's a video that got me interested in base building:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yoBfR_eslA4

Boid Gaming on Youtube features some very cool bases, such as this one:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d7fC6pD9-L4

I don't know how he does some of the things he does.

And that's all before we start tilting pieces sideways for more complex build options. I usually try to find interesting spots on very beautiful planets and build bases that use the interesting feature and enhance the enjoyment of the planet's beauty. Here are some screenshots of one recent base:

http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1264205584

Bottom view:

I called this the "Levels of beauty base" because the top overlooks one beautiful area, and the bottom provides a view of another beautiful area. I'll switch to my other user and post a few more.

Swingline, thanks for your kind words! I'm still learning. About how to tilt the pieces, you need to build a room above ground level, add a door, prepare to add a ramp but rotate the ramp to the steep position (using the "r" key to rotate), add that, then delete the room and door (not the ramp), add a door to the ramp, add a room to the now tilted door, and you have a tilted room. Here's a video someone made to demonstrate it:

Base building is part of the quest and a side aspect of the game - where some creative people really pushed it over the limits, by f.e. editing config files or using mods - tons of cool bases on yt, though. Nevertheless, I would be careful to make a buy decision based solely on that aspect, especially when you expect a functionality like in the mentioned games.

Here are a few mods (not a complete list) that add a lot to base building. I haven't really explored the new building pieces yet or tried all of these, because only others who use those mods can see them if they visit:

https://www.nexusmods.com/nomanssky/mods/348/
https://nomansskymods.com/mods/eucli-ea-more-buildable-decorations-atlas-rises-edition/
https://nomansskymods.com/mods/darconia-for-atlas-rises-modular-version/

I do use the SimCity 5300 mod sometimes, so far just to choose exactly where to build a base. (Thanks to theFisher86 for that, and to the modding community in general!)

Bear in mind that there is no guaranty that all these mods will run in the next and upcoming updates. You could make the access to your work very dependent on the goodwill of modders.

To be honest... you can build large, cool bases and all, yes. But like much of NMS there is that depth problem. There isnt much to do on the base once you build it. You can grow stuff to sell for money, and you can decorate with some tables, chairs, lighting, and a few knick-nacks. You can install a handful of useful things... a trader terminal, a first aid clicky, landing pads for trading, and a few containers that slowly regenerate warp fuel components or some junk. Past that its just empty rooms, as many big empty rooms as you want to make, and you can fill those with more chairs I guess. You can stick in the base quest aliens so it does not feel totally empty but they just say more or less "I got nothing" after you do all the quests. One of them gives you repeatable boring quests not worth doing.

Its not a base building game. Its a game that lets you build a base. The difference there is huge. NMS bases can be a fun diversion and hugely profitable. You can spend hours doing it. But at the end, no one can visit you there, you can't even sit in your chairs, and its very hollow.

Eternity, you totally sold me. Between your work and a couple of those videos... WOW!!!!! That first video, the way the player worked along the constrains of the cliffside to create layers of depth... gave me goosebumps. Thank you for taking the time.

I've heard they do sales with patches and a new patch is coming, so I might hold out to get it on sale... if I have the will power to wait...

Thanks again, mate. You're doing some awesome stuff.
