You can do the Awakenings, Artemis, and Atlas main stories in ~20 hours if you push it and don't get sidetracked by various base building side quests. From there you pretty much have it in the bag.
But on the other hand, you can go hundreds of hours looking for the perfect star ship or multi-tool, each incrementally better than the last.
On my current play through, I'm roughly 75 hours in and I almost have every mod I want to get for my exosuit and spaceship; I have all inventory spaces unlocked in my exosuit. I have a great primary space ship which will be hard to find an improvement upon (but there's guaranteed to be one or two improved ships out there). I just acquired a full slot A-class capital ship, so I have a bit of freighter base modification in my near future. And otherwise, I can go where I want and do what I want without much holding me back except my own imagination.
YMMV
My usual play everytime I remake is how fast I can get a decent base to being able to make bio domes so I can start my grow ops. I know players that build a base just enough to get components and that's it. Hell you could wait it out until you get a freighter and use that as a permanent home.
I would recommend playing out the primary missions at least once. It's not required to really build anything, between using the blueprint analyzer, base computer and your workers you get. They give you everything you need know. However the missions give you a story of the galaxy. Which I find rather morbid and shocking but great story altogether.
