Sadly you only get 1 chance for the free freighter once you accept it. You have a couple choices 1 being buying a new one or 2 starting a new game till you get to that point again. 3. If you have an older Save file you can load that up and progress from that point onwards.
Except they ruined the grind by adding the Mining feature, every new player will be overflowing with units two weeks into their game.
Besides mining, do the base building missions until you get the farmer at your base. Can learn to grow things to make circuit boards that sell pretty well. Each day I log in I make a quick $9 mil from that, and that's just a pretty casual thing. I could ramp it up to a much larger scale if was less lazy. :-)
Bad freighter is better than no freighter ;)
Money is easy, just build a farm. Even mining copper will fill your coffers quickly!
If you don't have blueprints for extractors and power generator, just dig up some buried technology and purchase blueprints at the anomaly.
You can though. By refusing the first freighter ( which is always low end of the scale) , each subsequent freighter battle will always award the ship for free until you accept one. On my old save I skipped the first ship, then a few afterwards till I landed a 34 slot A class dreadnaught. For free. The only thing higher is an S, but I still got the max slot count on it.

It just takes time, MANY warp jumps and or save-scumming which I'm loathe to bother with.
Thanks for the help folk !
Hey, on a side note, when you get the units built up, warp only to booming, rich, or wealthy systems only. Every 5 or so warps you'll get the defend a freighter battle. I landed a 34 slot s class dreadnaught recently by doing so. Don't warp to lower class systems. Just the rich ones. Good luck in your search.
