I followed a distress beacon to another ship, its broken and my ship disappeared
2nd planet ive been to including the starting planet, been screwing around enjoying the sights. wasnt attacked or anything. a friend joined my game and left but he wasnt even in game while I was flying to the beacon. I have no idea what happened but im stranded here until I can maybe fix this heap, 3 hours walk from my base. The ONLY upside I can see is the ship I found is slightly better than mine, but literally every system is broken hahahahaaaaaaaa I didnt bring any machines either. Any idea if this is a thing that happens a lot or am I just lucky....

When you find a ship, your presented with two options. One to get the ship outright, the other to swap it with your current ship.

If you swap it, any "unowned" ships will despawn the moment you reload. On the plus side, all the resources you need to repair the basic components (launch, engine) should be nearby. The other stuff can remain broken.

so it is possible to have both ships? I did realize I could reload an hour before it happened, not great but an improvement. Just not sure what else to do with the other ship even if I fix it.

If you choose to keep both (you can have up to 6) you can use the menu to summon them (provided your current ship has launch fuel, it uses your current ships fuel not the summoned one) or later when you get a freighter they all park there.

You can't get rid of ships (without mods) though, only replace them. So having a bunch of low ranked ships can be a bit annoying (if you find a nice crashed ship, you'll have to summon one to replace it and you can't do that at space stations).

yeah, since I was able to reload, I went back to it and slavaged what I could. Since I cant build a beacon yet to go back to it, and owning a ship isnt enough to get an auto beacon, I just figured it was best to move on, maybe find another one later and decide if its worth repairing when I have some better machinery on hand

Thats funny because when i follow distress beacons there is never anything there.. The crashed junk is there but no ship is, so i gave up following them..

That and how much of a nightmare it is to actually repair a ship now.

For a new game starting out, the repair system is significantly easier than it used to be.

You can either hunt the stuff yourself (going the zero unit route) or you can just buy everything needed from trade terminals which works out a lot cheaper than the old system.

If that sounds inconvenient compared to the old system, you probably aren't short on units and should have just bought the ship in the first place.

No way at release repairing ships was an excellent source of aquiring new ships without money.. This new version is a grindy joke if you can even make half the stuff while stuck on some planet searching.

haha maybe i should have repaired it for the free ships then but it wasnt a huge upgrade. I've only been playing very casually for a few hours so I dnt have a lot of gear or anything yet.

The game did give me one chance to relocate the damaged ship, so I recalled it to my base and got it running. The only difference I can see up front is the extra 10 cargo space over my current (starter) ship, but most of the storage is damaged and wants elements I dont have yet. I figure I can repair enough of it to still get a benefit, like working on my own car at home in the driveway, even if I don't end up saving any time or money, its been a good experience solidifying the knowledge required and I found some other neat stuff along the way, so I can't complain. Thanks for all the input. I just need to see if there are any other advantages of this ship over the first.

Just to be clear, I can't sell either ship? A guy at the station is selling a laser rifle for 2 million and I dont have near that so I would love it if one of my boats could be a down payment on some new tech, but I wouldn't be surprised if the rifle were meant to tease with no real current accessibility haha

I was able to just walk up to a trade terminal and buy everything I needed to repair and upgrade for pretty cheap, money is not an issue early on and I was able to make a lot of money on my starting planet.

Sure you did.. And how did you find that trade terminal at low level.

I'm talking about the previous version of repairing ships.

At release, you didnt repair ships at all. You repaired some of the modules installed, but the ships themselves were fully functional as the repair system didnt exist back then. They also actually had modules installed, and you could make a decent profit just finding wrecks and salvaging. It's how i normally repaired my modules after a lot of black hole runs back then.

Are you serious or trolling? trade terminals are in every space station (2 actually) trading posts and trading stations.

squash the beef pls, this is about salvaging ships in current version. I stayed and fixed it up because it seemed like a nice heavy gauntlet to pick up early on. I seriously stayed on the first planet just long enough to put a roof on some walls just to walk away from it ASAP and then the next planet over immediately had a distress beacon with a ship and I hit some buttons and realized I made a mistake. Luckily the game let me reload before I lost my main and only functional ship, and then I fixed the broke one anyway because in the course of not knowing what to do either way, I realized I had landed on a planet covered in more salt than I know what to do with except, of course, sell it. Now I have a big $2 million multi-tool and 2 ships and I can't figure out what anything

I know but they are so absent in the new version starting a new character, getting to one then back to your ship would be death even on normal.. Its incredibly hard to survive at the start and you cannot craft or make anything much without following the story.
