Cargo matters to you, because of your playstyle needing cargo space.
My playstyle doesn't need cargo space, and I never used my haulers... (EDIT : besides parked storage for when I want to craft something... when I feel like...)
So yeah... my launch fuel reduction on my explorer, and jump range and manoeuvrability matters more to me than cargo.
exotics are very good all around except they lack storage space. Late game space is less of an issue and these become a very solid choice.
but if I could only have one ship, it would be a fighter.
Give me one example of when you would need that extra firepower, maneuverability or jump range? One situation where it actually made a difference. One situation where that + firepower, maneuverability or jump range did something for you, that I could not have done just as easily with my max upgraded 48 slot S class hauler.
I am currently concentrating on one save that I use my C Explorer the most. It has more storage than the Exotic and more maneuverable than the Shuttle and Haulers. I use everything else for storage, which is sooooooo easy to get to at any given time.
I never found a good Fighter that was worth giving up anything. If I spend more time farming for a Fighter, which I would trade the Explorer for. That may change but I get bored of the ship farming.
If you hop around on a planet much, the explorer is much cheaper and has considerable cargo space. And was dirt CHEAP!
As for fighting, I ran until I got good shielding and ALWAYS keep a good quantity of recharge. Even with limited firepower, I can take on Pirates head on and have the ability to get behind them as well.
So yeah, a C-class Explorer is my favorite for now. If I find a big Fighter, that may change but I like spending less on launch since I am easily distracted by EVERYTHING... and as was said, jump range is mostly immaterial unless you are trying to get to the core, the edge or a Hub.
If you like fighting Pirates, maybe the Fighter. But you really don't need the power and lose fuel efficiency.
If you like hoarding, the all Haulers. Only Haulers.
If you like exploring, while the Exotics are cool, they are less functional than even a C-class Explorer (IMHO).
Shuttles... why? Just, why. Maybe it adds a bit of a challenge to, well, EVERYTHING. But yeah, why?
I hardly have 50% of my cargo slots used in my 38 slots explorer at all time.
I don't trade, I have a maxed suit, all I do is hop around planets, land wherever I want whenever I feel, to do whatever is to do around.
I have 500 million units, I have nothing to spend on it really, and I don't try to make more units...
So just the launch fuel reduction, because I have to recharge less often is a good enough QOL for me because I play SURVIVAL, and it uses more fuel than normal mode.
So while I have at least 15 slots unused in my explorer, why in the world would I want to have 10 more unused slots on a hauler that I have LESS FUN to fly ?
What is hard to understand about "playstyle" and "preferences" ?
Do I try to convince you that the explorer is a better ship ? like you try to prove with the hauler ? Nope...
Hell I even in a fresh restart, decided I would fly a SHUTTLE as a main ship... just BECAUSE you know ???
OP asks what is a good all around ship, there is none, or all (depends on how to look at it), Just the Classes... better have an S whatever, but besides that, fly what you LIKE.
Heck If you even find a 28 slots S class fighter you prefer the look of, go for it.
Oh and OP stated he has 30MILLION units.. so yeah... haulers cost a lot too.
I personally also find haulers ugly... so yeah... Preferences...
But there are visual differences:
A Hawler is terrible in 3rd person view over a planet, but has a good cockpit for outside view in 1st person view. A fighter has good visibility both in 1st and 3rd person view. You can set the FOV independant for flying and for walking on planets, I reduce the FOV from 100 to 70 with 1080p for seing NPC holograms in my ship (during missions and messages).
1: The easiest way to reach the center of the galaxy is to use black holes. My jump range is 1200 and there is always a Black hole within that range. If I wanted to jump to the center without using black holes, I would just use my freighter which has a jump range of 2155. Nor am I in Euclid.
2: As I have a hauler I always have more than enough launch fuel with me. And if I were to run empty, resources for fuel can be found on all planets. Having enough fuel is such a trivial thing.
I also play on survival and have 670 million units.
Once you have some upgrades in NMS ship class becomes insignificant, storage space is still the one thing that is worth something.
Just to be clear, my post was a response to the following post by Suzaku:
"And maneuverability. And damage dealt. And shield strength. And hyperdrive range. And launch thruster cost.
But yeah, "no practical difference"."
He though that ship class matters in NMS and I think ship classes does not matter as they can do everything just as easily as the next class. Except one thing, storage space.
And just to be clear, different play styles when it comes to ships in NMS does not exist, because 1: all ships can do the same action just as easily. 2: NMS space combat has not enough depth in order to allow different play styles.
When you say that you have your own play style, I think you mean that you role play your game your own way. There is nothing wrong with that.
Sorry had to lol...

Your playstyle doesn't matter. You're fighting the same two ships and jumping to the same 4 colored systems as the rest of us. You aren't doing anything a hauler can't do 99.999999% as easily.
there isnt one.
on the flipside, the only thing your hauler can do that a maxed out S class fighter can't do is hold a few more stacks of crap, and by this point in the game, that is not a huge deal.
Or I could bust out my vanilla 48 slot fighter :P (with its 1 tech slot, its sadly no longer top tier).
not that money matters much either but you can get a maxed out S class fighter much sooner due to price point. Thats about the only real advantage.
Hauler is an OK all around ship. I do a lot of combat, by intent, and I prefer something with ++ damage, but they all work.
maybe the better answer is
anything top tier that isnt a shuttle or exotic, and the exotic is fine if you don't care about storage space. Shuttles have no redeeming factors.
Now there are those who are trying to 'correct' my statement that 'there are no round ships in NMS". To you I say: "tsk, tsk" ... the example presented above is not all round; I submit to you that it is, in fact, oviod
