Autosave occurs when you get out of your ship. I'm unsure if other events trigger it.

Save station in your base or leaving a ship saves your game.

I agree. There needs to be a timed autosave. I was building a long way from my ship the other day. Just finished and then crashed. Took about 1hr of my life away.

The issue with the game crashing when you board your ship is fixed in the experimental branch. I haven't tried it, though, and you should always back up your save before trying the experimental branch. It will eventually be released on the main branch.

Aye Player, You can build a save point and a save beacon. Save beacon is like a manual save that you can use to mark a location that will leave a star that can be a color of your choice. Save point is a new save that can be used if you are building or mining etc. Save often and I mean save save save. We all have lost hours of play time because you never know when a crash may happen. Better safe than sorry and waste your precious time. Build them on your freighter and after or before your jump save. SAVE SAVE SAVE, build them where ever you can, they can always be dismantled. Only 5 per planet. SAVE you just can not say that enough. Good Luck..

You also save when you click the flag at discovered sites.

Build a save point module and use it. Saves all the issues.

^^
This. It's called 'manual save'. This one lasts longer. Same save with Save Points which you build inside the game.
The autosave is when you leave your ship, it's not that useful if you encounter bugs, generally it will do but you may need to reload your other save, which means you must make manual saves often.

It was the first time i had it crash after building like that. I guess i'll have to start manually saving now.

Bethsda games turned me into a compulsive saver, so much its second nature to want to save all the time no matter the game...

Yeah but bethesda games had mods that let you set auto timed saves. I think I had mine set to 1 minute lol.

I didn't use bethesda autosaves nor relied on them, when heavily modded. it could cause save corruptions. seemed manual saves were less prone to the autosave game corruption.

I found that if I had autosaves with a short enough interval it stopped the crashes. I think the game relied on the saves and if there were too many changes it would overload. So having short time periods meant the save had less changes.

First thing to put down when building anything: the beacon.
It saves your progress and give you a marker to see in which direction to run with your pipe/wire in hands when you try to connect your hotspots to your base.

Never use the B word....
