Can you play in VR WITHOUT tracked motion controllers?
I have a flight & racing cockpit setup so using motion controllers while seated in VR is next to impossible, so can you play with just an Xbox controller and/or keyboard/mouse - and seated in a fixed position (ie not a swiveling office chair)? I generally play Elite Dangerous and don't see myself really getting into NMS due to the lack of a flight model (that's really just arcade flight) and I'm not at all a fan of survival games, which is really what NMS is.

All that said I do want to try it but not if it's just going to be a completely frustrating mess (yes, I own the game but won't be home for a few days so just setting expectations for myself). Oh and I have the HP Reverb Pro, so WMR which I see is having issues (but also see is maybe fixed by the experimental branch in Steam).

(maybe we can just answer this without pages of crapping on the game, VR, performance, etc.) I should be able to handle it's performance as I'm running an 8086K@5.3Ghz, 2080Ti @ 2100Mhz, 32GB DDR4@3600 so not the fastest rig around but pretty damn fast.

Thanks,

~X

Does not appear to be so at the moment. If you switch the VR controllers to smooth instead of teleport it's ok though. I use a gamepad for ED (777 hrs) in flatscreen/VR and with VR controllers set to smooth in VR NMS is ok. The flight takes a little getting used to, it's a wrist movement not a hand movement is the trick.

I was expecting to be able to play this seated with keyboard and mouse, or hotas... logged in and my gun is backwards and doesn't aim. Movement works, viewing works but not arms..

Yeah, I'll wait until they get that working before I even try - NMS really isn't the game for me anyway as I have over 6000 hours in Elite and run a Youtube channel dedicated to it. Just wanted to check it out but not putting up with motion controllers for flight.

Use the appearance modifier to switch your gloves to something else, then back.

They should implement the flight system from Elite... Than it would be perfect. I like the survival aspect of NMS but the arcadish flight model kills it. So as Exigeous says maybe we see a melting someday. Until then its time to load the Frameshift Drive Commanders ! Cmdr Jim Panse out...

I hadn't played Elite in a few days and logged in after a 5 hour NMS session. It oddly felt like Elite was *reality* where NMS was some game (both played in VR). It was so refreshing to fly a spaceship again - vs. play a survival game with some lame arcade flight. Not pooping on NMS, it's not trying to be a flight sim like Elite is - but yeah, imagine if we could fly around in Elite and when you land on a planet it switched into the NMS engine, now THAT would be a game!

I hear ya... Yes that would be awesome. I love to fly my Type-10 in VR. Its a blast... even after all the time. Like a really big space ship. Or switch to my fighter and roam through a ringsystem around a gas gigant. Elite does so many things good as it does it bad. Lets hope one game will someday be "the" game.

Until then... well lets enjoy both ! So every itch can be pleased :-)

Greetz and fly safe !

Did you change your body type?
Many find some of the different Body Models cause visual quirks.
That is why I have stayed with the default body type until I hear different.

Right there with you - I really dislike the cockpits of all the other big ships as they feel so enclosed where the T10 feels so big and open, those Lakon cockpits are just awesome. I also greatly prefer the medium class ships, specifically the Krait Mark II.

I had the same experience with the Vulture - love that huge, open cockpit with it's crazy manuverability. If you haven't yet tried the Guardian fighters you should, in VR their cockpits are amazing. Hopefully you'll stop by my Youtube channel as I make some of the best and most concise tutorials around (if I can kiss my own @ss a bit!) http://www.youtube.com/cmdrexigeous
