Figured out that it was my virus protection that was the problem. Just changed the settings to allow No mans sky. No problems now apart from the fact I cannot remap keys.
1. update to latest nvidia driver
2. download and install latest java
3. download and install vulkan SDK
4. Switch to experimental branch
5. Choose a mixed reality controller scheme from the shared schemes at steamVR - settings - controller management
Currently playing in VR with samsung odyssey, gtx 970.
note - before doing all of this, the game was running only when I had a wireless xbox for pc turned on, without my mr controllers in other words, it needed to detect a controller so it can run.
I had this same exactly issue when trying to experiment with the beta Vulkan build. I won't even get to the Hello Games logo screen.
I found a solution: It might be a firewall issue. I personally use my old copy of free Online Armor Firewall 7 (the only Firewall I actually like). Even when I added the program to my program list, set it to trusted, then allow internet connections, the game would just go to the Desktop.
However, when I shutdown Online Armor, the game boots fine. It's a really really weird bug. I did not have this issue with the old OpenGL build, just the Vulkan one.
====
If manually adding NMS.exe to your firewall's exception list or whatever doesn't work, try shutting down the firewall.
