Can the game run in background?

I know in multiplayer it does, but as soon as my friend leaves my world or I leave his, the world reverts back to "single player" and stops running in the background while i swapped windows while hyperdriving.
If there is a work around I'm unaware of please educate me. If not, I can deal. It' s no biggie, just a small annoyance.

I think you'll find that refining timers count down even if you shut down the game..

I've had issues with leaving stuff in refiners. They tend to just disappear in some cases. Not sure if it happens if you quit or just leave the planet.. either way it's annoying.

Yes it runs in background if you immediately ALT-TAB from the 3D world. Useful to complete the extreme planet milestones. I think the game is paused instead if you ALT-TAB in the menu (after hitting ESC or P).

Most things run on the games time and will happen even if you alt+tab out. The night and day cycle should as well. Warping is different I think in that it has loading screens involved. Its about the only thing I've found you can't alt+tab thru.
