Starting new survival mode. RIP
:cozycastondeath:

First time playing since launch.
Starting survival mode.
I can't find Sodium fast enough to prevent myself from dying.
This is'nt stopping me from playing but.
After work today (i played an hour before work)
I starting a 2nd game, i wanted to see if i could pull it off.
I knew what i was looking for right off the bat and still end up dying to sheilds failing.
I'm not saying don't start me in a serious situation. But damn like a fresh new player doing this will get roflstomped.

Yeah; it's a little unforgiving at first. I ran for caves a lot as inside them your health recovers (while looking).

Use the Camera to find a cave so you can get a decent start.

See me do it here:

Survival mode is fun and challenging to start, but it gets a bit tedious after a while because every planet will be harsh and inhospitable.

It would be nice if the starter planet was harsh, but there was a mix of planet types afterward...

does normal mode not have dangerous planets?

Yes it does, and if you die it shows your corpse on your compass to go get your stuff back. I believe most play in normal mode; especially starting out, but up to the player.

What I like most about this game is exploration with quests to make units, etc. So many cool planets/creatures to discover.

Btw; you can have multiple saves/types of games.

Yeah, the initial period is a tough nut. Somewhere in the discussions, there is a compiled list of tips to make it to your ship. I needed every one of them. Made it to the first cave with one tick left on the clock.

Longer term:

I did not know I could just outrun pirates...used that tactic a lot since I just wanted the steam achievement.

Everything is pretty much out to get you in survival...until you finally jump to Eissentam. Then it is pretty sweet- almost like normal except the consequence if you do die.

I finally started my first Permadeath mode, after hundreds of hours, on a toxic planet and got around for over 2 hrs before even taking off in the ship.
Never run or jet pack unless you must.
Bash (melee) instead of shoot for resources if you can.
NEVER kill unless it is in self defense. Then get away and hide ASAP. Even playing hide & seek around a big boulder will do.
Follow the prompts precisely and quickly. I kinda missed one and ended up wandering. Thus the delay in launch... Had to go back to the building to get the seal. Yeah, almost 2 hrs BEFORE getting the seal. But hey, it''s in the name -"Tracx".
Once you get the scanner fixed, scan everything until you find resources that will keep you alive. ie: secondary elements (sodium & oxygen) in plants or stones. Harvest (melee) as often as possible while scanning (alternating between F & C) and following prompts.
If you find a cave, LOAD UP!
Duck into buildings, caves or get under overhangs if possible. I only used one overhang and wandered around the building for a while using it to recharge. THEN I noticed the cave up the hill behind my ship... which I had been to a few times already. :steamfacepalm:
Unlike me, use camera mode. :steammocking:
The game usually supplies everything you need to survive and fortunately I did not spawn on an extreme planet. For that... yeah, sorry 'bout ya'. Probably doable but no room for error. None. And I ain't that guy. Constant storms, critters trying to kill me, ok. Throw in the sentinels trying to kill me on site from the start. Nope.
For me, Permadeath is just more of a grind. I'll just stick with Normal.

Not true! :)

And that's kind of the joy of Survival - when you do find a Lush/Bountiful planet that doesn't have hostile sentinels and doesn't have frequent storms, it's kind of like finding a $20 between the couch cushions. It's pretty great.

So wait it's a survival game right. So is survival mode just a word for permadeath and the normal mode is regular survival gameplay.

It's been a long time since I've played, so maybe that's been tweaked. Or, maybe I'm just really unlucky...

The planet you start on is random I believe, so could be much harder sometimes, but could restart to get a better chance if it's to crazy.

How do the game mode types differ? by: Starman

Normal Mode = Easy Mode ( Casual Gameplay ) For a relaxed yet "official" version of gameplay. You can feel good about what you accomplish as it's legit, even if slightly easy.

Survival Mode = Veteran Mode ( Hostile Environments / Harder Resource Management ) A new set of challenges for veteran players to overcome. More planets with hostile environments that deplete your shields quicker. You also lose more health while running around and take more damage from ships, creatures and sentinels.

Permadeath = YOLO baby! It's difficult + you only get 1 life. You die, game over man, game over.

That's not really my issue. I love the challenge of starting off on an hostile planet in survival mode. However, in my experience, if you play in survival mode EVERY planet in the game is hostile/extreme or has aggressive sentinels.

What I'd like is to start on a really hostile/difficult planet, but after that, I'd like a normal mix of planets. That way, I can find a more hospitable planet to build my base on.
Subwatt Aug 11, 2019 @ 10:59am
Is there not a good mix of laid back planets on survival? What about normal, is it mostly on lethal planets?

I'm looking for a mode that has a good mix of both, i guess it does'nt really matter this second. Since i'll more than likely make a new save once beyond drops. But i would be good to know which mode offers what.
